Setting

Pythagoras’s playground

At Casa Cook in the eastern Aegean isle of Samos you can pretty much walk on water…the floors are mostly liquid after all. Concrete pathways are out, in favour of six swimming pools and a number of H2O installations. Other transcendent experiences here include an epicurean adventure at the Beach House (care of its Josper grill), days spent on cabanas suspended above (more) water and sundowners next to a fire-pit. It’s walking distance to the town of Pythagorio, named for Samos’s famous son, where traditional tavernas line the harbour in a suitably ungeometric pattern.

Worth getting out of bed for

Samos’s trigonometry titan and mathematical mastermind gets his own namesake town here – Pythagorio is within walking distance of the hotel. You’ll also be able to visit the archaeological site where the Temple of Hera once stood, visit vineyards producing the island’s celebrated sweet muscat wines and clamber through the Tunnel of Eupalinos, an aqueduct built under Mount Kastro in the sixth century (also home to some pleasing geometry that would make Pythagoras proud).

Local restaurants

There are lots of traditional tavernas to pick from in Pythagorio, where you can sit out on the waterfront and select your venue based on its choice of music.

Local bars

Between the hotel and Pythagorio, stop off for refreshments at Asterias, a beach club with fun for all the family.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this island hotel in Greece and unpacked their shorts and swimwear, a full account of their beach break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Casa Cook Samos…

In the birthplace of Epicurus, good food and fine wine are guaranteed – and with one look at the menu at Casa Cook’s Beach House, it’s clear the chef is committed to the finer things in life. Samos is also somewhere you’ll be able to pay homage to the hypotenuse, but that’s another story.

At the newly unveiled Casa Cook in this eastern Aegean isle, just off the coast of Turkey, there are indeed angular terracotta buildings (though not many triangles), most of which are connected by vast pools of water. Some are installations, but there are six open for swims. It’s a water world of various floating neighbourhoods, where you can swim-up to your suite (and next-door’s) for convivial cocktails, friendly banter and even a cup of sugar. As well as raising a glass to Epicurus and tipping your hat to the godfather of triangles, you’ll be able to visit the Temple of Hera and pay respect to Zeus’s fiery wife (/sister). The good times are guaranteed.
