Style

Med minimalism

Setting

Lounging by the lagoon

While the climes of ancient Alexandria are as balmy as they come, Casa Cook North Coast is nothing but cool with an Egyptian take on Mediterranean minimalism. For fans of barefoot living with a side of brutalism, this demure, adults-only dame of the desert is an instant hit. Inside, thatched roofs, rattan furniture and hand-woven details sit beside grey swathes of untreated plaster. Outside, a seemingly endless saltwater lagoon stretches into the sea. Shack up on a poolside daybed for sun-lashed cocktails or head to the Kitchen Club, the hotel’s beating heart, where a menu of European sharing plates takes a little-bit-of-everything approach to communal dining.

Top Table

Nab a table near the lagoon for a meal soundtracked by meditative aquatic laps.

Dress Code

Barefoot bohemian; think flowing fabrics and rustic statement jewellery.

Hotel restaurant

The Kitchen Club is a breezy dining space perched at the edge of the salt water lagoon. Here, a sense of community is encouraged through health-conscious (though equally delicious) European sharing plates which guide guests around the Mediterranean with dishes like Italian burrata, home-grown broccoli tempura and flaky baklava.

Hotel bar

There are two: prop up at the lagoon bar or go in for some toe-in-sand sipping at the hotel beach bar. The menu includes a generous selection of wine and beers alongside an inventive cocktail list designed by Berlin-based mixologist David Wiedermann. Go for the signature North Coast Martini or opt for something fruity and funky like the Basil Peach Sling with homemade hibiscus flower water.

Last orders

Breakfast runs from 8am to 11am, lunch from 1pm to 5pm and dinner from 6pm to 10pm. Good news, cocktail lovers – the lagoon bar is open 24 hours a day.

Room service

Order anything from the Kitchen Club menu straight to your door during the restaurant's usual opening hours.

Egypt

Set outside of El Alamein’s Porto Marina and 150 kilometres to the west of Alexandria, Casa Cook North Coast is surrounded by miles upon miles of pristine beaches and salt water lagoons.

Planes

Alexandria’s Borj Al Arab is 90 minutes away by car. Transfers can be arranged for $105-$240 depending on the vehicle.

Automobiles

Driving in Egypt can be an unforgettable experience, though perhaps not always for the right reasons. If you’re feeling up for an adventure, there’s free parking at the hotel, subject to availability.

Worth getting out of bed for

Miles of white sand beaches make El Alamein a playground for surfers, sun-seekers and spindrifters, but there’s much more to the region than its natural charms. Visitors can explore its pivotal role in WW2 at the Military Museum, which contains tanks and equipment used in battle. Equally historical, the Marina El Alamein dates back some 2000 years when it was a bustling port – some of its ancient ruins can be spotted rubbing shoulders with more modern additions. In Cleopatra’s stomping ground, an hour's drive away in Alexandria, you’ll find plenty more wonders. Head to the Great Library of Alexandria and the colossal Pharos Lighthouse before stopping off at more sombre though equally interesting sites such as the Catacombs of Kom el-Shuqqafa.

Local restaurants

For a taste of old Italy head to Scalini restaurant, an open-air beachside restaurant serving comforting pasta dishes, fresh salads and amore-inspiring desserts. Over in downtown Marina Mall Alalamain, satisfy your palate at Hamata Island seafood restaurant with a menu of fish from the Red Sea.

Local bars

Breezy beach club by day and disco by night, Seacode Beach Club has you covered for live music accompanied by classic cocktails; pencil in a Friday night when Egypt’s up-and-coming DJs hit the decks.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this boho hotel on the edge of the desert and unpacked their beach hats and sand-dusted sliders, a full account of their lazy days break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Casa Cook North Coast due west of Alexandria…

Egypt’s not shy of national treasures and an hour and a half along the coast from the fabled Alexandria, Casa Cook North Coast proclaims itself as the latest string to the land’s wondrous bow. At the foot of the Red Sea, the hotel toys with contrasts; contemporary, beach-inspired design sits beside timeless desert landscapes while traces of rustic antiquity stir alongside signifiers of twenty-first century minimalism. The vast lagoon-come-pool is a wash of aquamarine at the core of the hotel, surrounded by charcoal daybeds and native cacti. At the restaurant, no dish is left unturned, with a menu of European sharing plates that encourages togetherness.
