Our favourite rooms

With refined, wood-focused interiors from storied designer André Fu, all options make for an enticing place to rest. But for anyone looking to elevate their space (not literally, though top-floor suites do come with striking vantage points), the Pool Terrace Suites have our hearts, courtesy of plunge-pool-toting alfresco spaces. If you’d rather admire widescreen cityscapes from the comfort of your cushy king-size bed, the Premier Skyline King will be your wonderland.

Poolside

You’ll find the hotel’s outdoor heated pool (open from 7am to 7pm) up on the 14th floor, flanked with plush sunloungers, scarlet-scalloped umbrellas and views that feel as soothing as a stint in the water.

Spa

Mind-calming serenity doesn’t typically come easy somewhere like Taipei, but Capella’s holistic spa effortlessly mutes the constant city chatter. Four treatment rooms — and one couples’ pick with a Hinoki bath tub — welcome sleep-inducing massages; and there’s a mindfulness studio, relaxation lounge, flotation pod, sauna and steam room to expel any lingering stress.

Top Table

Ember 28 takes the win for its flame-side seats.

Dress Code

A jacket and jeans fits the smart-casual requirements for Mizue, Rong Ju and Ember 28; at Plume and Atelier Plume, you’re welcome as you are.

Hotel restaurant

With five eateries to flit between, Capella Taipei is your own mini market. Laidback Plume lives a multitude of lives throughout the day: starting off strong with a spread of trad Taiwanese breakfast classics, before transforming into a tea house for pots of oolong and pastry-packed plates.

Mizue and Rong Ju are your smart-casual spots for lunch and dinner; the former serves its starred sushi in a ryokan-inspired setting, and the latter puts a modern spin on traditional Cantonese cuisine (bamboo-steamed dim sum, wok-fried noodles). Come evening, follow the flames to Ember 28, a brasserie-like restaurant where prime cuts, fresh fish and home-grown veg make up grilled-to-perfection platters.

If you’re looking to grab-and-go — or simply settle with a bite and a book — Atelier Plume is open between 11am and 7pm for oven-warm pastries, fresh salads and filled-to-the-crust sandwiches.

Hotel bar

There are bars in most of the restaurants, but for those dedicated to their tipples, we’d suggest picking Plume. After its tea connoisseurs have cleared out, lights are dimmed and mugs are swapped for cocktail coupes, lengthy lists of wines, beers and spirits.

Last orders

Plume plates 6.30am–12am (breakfast until 10am). Lunch at Mizue is 11.30am–3pm, Friday to Sunday; dinner is 6.30pm–10pm, Wednesday to Sunday. Rong Ju opens Tuesday to Saturday, 12pm–2.30pm and 6pm–10pm. Dinner at Ember 28 is 6pm–10pm, Friday to Tuesday.

Room service

Available from a separate menu between 6am and 1am.

Address
Capella Taipei
139 Dunhua North Road
Taipei City
105021
Taiwan

You’ll find Capella Taipei standing in the social locus of the city’s northeastern Songshan District, along Dunhua North Road.

Planes

Flights touch down into Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, a little under an hour from Capella Taipei. If you’re flying from within Taiwan, or coming from selected cities in Japan or China, Songshan Airport is your closest option; private transfers can be arranged to make the five-minute drive for TWD2,200.

Trains

Songshan is your nearest local station, with around-the-city routes along the MRT Green Line. Taipei Main Station is a 20-minute drive away, and has frequent high-speed rail routes to Taiwan’s cities, including Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung.

Automobiles

You won’t need a car in this well-connected corner of Taiwan; but if you are bringing a set of wheels, there’s free parking at the hotel.

Worth getting out of bed for

Tailored-to-you activities come as standard at Capella Taipei, with in-house ‘culturists’ on call to arrange anything from morning t’ai chi with Master Tang, guided city tours and informative talks to calligraphy and artisan-led craft workshops, traditional tea ceremonies and cooking classes

If you’d rather take the reins, step into your view and secure a snapshot of this historic city from the top of Taipei 101, or summit Elephant Mountain’s short-but-steep ascent for equally compelling vistas. The National Palace Museum has almost 700,000 artefacts to admire, and the city’s night markets make evenings an enticing affair for their appetising street food and locally crafted curios.

For a taste of Taiwan’s centuries-old traditions, make time for a jaunt to Jiufen — a small mountain village, 45 minutes east of Taipei, and laden with time-honoured tea houses and streets that look straight out of Studio Ghibli. Banyan trees, bamboo groves and a pond, fringed with fireflies, make up the calming landscapes of Da’an Forest Park for those craving an inside-the-city retreat.

Local restaurants

Steaming bamboo bowls of homemade dumplings are the soul-soothing staples at storied Din Tai Fung; and the simmered-for-hours beef and noodle soups at Lao Shan Dong have been rallying an equally loyal crowd since 1949. Sustainably sourced ingredients form the foundation for award-winning dishes at Mountain and Sea House, where modern touches elevate traditional Taiwanese cuisine.

Local cafés

You won’t go thirsty searching for bubble tea in Taipei, but if you’re overwhelmed by choice, we’d suggest sticking with Chun Shui Tang, whose creator is considered one of the famed drinks’ founding fathers. They have outposts across the city, but you’ll find your closest a 15-minute walk away along Nanjing East Road.

Local bars

Lauded mixologist Aki Wang shakes punchy concoctions with natural, island-sourced ingredients at Indulge Experimental Bistro; and at Kor Taipei, spirits come served with a side of sleek interiors and live DJ sets.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this design-forward hotel in the Songshan District and unpacked their night market trinkets, a full account of their Taiwanese break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Capella Taipei…

In the 16th century, the Portuguese coined Taiwan as Ilha Formosa, the ‘beautiful island’. You may not hear the nickname muttered along its streets much anymore, but its capital city still encompasses it deservingly, with more than just good looks to tout.

Much like its locale, Capella Taipei — towering above the Songshan District — comes off all bright and shiny at first glance; but once inside, each art-adorned corridor and meticulously designed space tells a different tale. Over 350 works showcase Capella’s network of creatives; refined rooms admire the city’s striking landmarks and fringing mountains, and chefs display their deft skill across its five raved-about restaurants.

An equally authentic side of the city is told by your in-house ‘culturist’, too, who is on call for guided tours, tea ceremonies and spotlighting the island’s heritage. And if all that city exploring has you craving a little solitude, the spa and sky-high pool puts a serene layer between you and this vibrant capital.
