At the hotel

In rooms: WiFi, minibar, coffee- and tea-making kit, bathrobes and L’Occitane bath products. Deluxe and Gold domes have air-conditioning and heated mattresses; Presidential suites regulate their own temperature thanks to bioclimatic design.

Our favourite rooms

Upgrades pay off handsomely at Bosko: opt for a Golden Mush-Room over a Deluxe and you’ll be rewarded with a private hot tub on your deck. The wood-framed Presidential Mush-Rooms bring more spoils still, including a steam room with a view, and a sunken plunge pool for which the word ‘panoramic’ is pure understatement.

Poolside

Mushroom-like sunshades crown the spectacular Sky Pools. A dipping spot that is not for the acrophobic, these heated, infinity-edge plunge pools bathe you in widescreen forest scenery and views of the reservoir — the Peñón rock in the distance presiding over your poolside downtime.

Spa

There’s no spa at Bosko, but book ahead for a choice of therapies dished on your ‘Mush-Room’s’ private terrace, so that your facial, hot-stone massage or sound healing session comes with nature’s soothing soundtrack.

Packing tips

A head for heights and a curiosity to spot some of the 52 bird species that call Bosko’s three-hectare forest reserve home.

Also

WiFi is allocated to each individual Mush-Room, but otherwise this lo-fi stay invites you to switch off, ditching TVs and sound systems in favor of immersing yourself in nature from your private tub, pool or deck.

Children

Bosko welcomes over-18s only.

Top Table

Head outdoors to the restaurant-side fire pit to hunker down and toast marshmallows to the crackle of burning logs.

Dress Code

Don't let a highland chill take the edge of your rock-gazing supper: layer up.

Hotel restaurant

Dining at Bosko is a figurative high point: Bogotá-born chef Pablo Naranjo has worked in France and India, given a TED Talk on his connection with food, and now champions modern takes on Colombian cuisine in polished plates that are as eye-catching as the rock views that his dining room offers. Settle in for a six-course tasting menu at this bijou dining spot; or dine à la carte on soups, salads, sharing plates of croquettas, and tuna steak draped in cauliflower purée or mushroom tortellini on a bed of plantain.

Hotel bar

There’s no official bar at Bosko, but aperitifs and wine pairings are available during restaurant hours, and your minibar is stocked with a choice of tipples.

Last orders

Bosko Restaurant opens at noon and takes last orders for the kitchen at 8.30pm.

Room service

There’s no room service at Bosko, but breakfast is brought each morning to your private terrace; à la carte picks include French toast, fried-egg-topped arepas and strawberry banana smoothie bowls.

Worth getting out of bed for

There's no judgment if you want to prune fingers and toes all day long, alternating between spells on your private terrace’s hot tub or plunge pool and dips in the cloud-high Sky Pools at Bosko. But what a waste of Guatapé that would be. Most venture here to climb El Peñón de Guatapé, a 240-metre-tall rock: climb its 700 or so steps to the summit and you'll have a view of the islet-studded Peñol-Guatapé reservoir to remember. For a closer inspection of its blue-green depths, take a one-hour speedboat tour; or keep your aquatic forays analogue with one of Bosko’s kayaks or stand-up paddleboards. The hotel also has a selection of cultural and nature-themed guided tours that are available to book.

Local restaurants

You're unlikely to dine away from Bosko, but Guatapé itself has a wealth of street-food stalls and indie eateries, peddling proudly Colombian plates such as carne desmechada (pulled beef) and pillowy arepas (maize flatbreads). Parrilla dining spots dot the lakeside and there are restaurants serving Indian or Thai cuisine, too.

Local bars

On Plazoleta del Zocatero, Del Origen Cantina Artesanal is a cocktail bar that also serves craft beer and bites. Also in town, La Barra Guatapé has colorful cocktails and parasol-shaded tables along its by-the-lake terrace.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this canopy-cuddled retreat in the Colombian highlands and unpacked their woven totes and coffee, a full account of their bucolic break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Bosko in Guatapé…

Bosko’s geodesic suites and wooden abodes are called Mush-Rooms. We’re not sure if their owner is a fun guy or whether this relates to their cap-like architecture. But much like their tasty namesakes, these tucked-into-the-forest, terraced suites are part of a wider eco-system, working in harmony with Bosko’s nature-rich setting.

Tech-focused frills are eschewed in favor of more analogue pursuits: Golden and Presidential suites come with either a hot tub or plunge pool and steam room, inviting you to soak in your leafy surroundings; and all suites have private terraces and a pared-back design made for indoor-outdoor living.

Days unfold with guided nature hikes, speedboat tours of the reservoir; wanders around the vibrant architecture, squares and cafés in town, or tackling the mighty ascent up Guatapé’s iconic rock. An at-altitude dip in Bosko’s Sky Pools or laidback supper at the hotel’s revered restaurant are welcome additions you’ll want to come home to.
