Setting

Edge-of-the-world escape

Black Sand Hotel — as you might have guessed — sits on onyx, volcanic shores in Iceland’s rugged south. It’s not just its name that nods to the locale: minimalist, monochrome interiors have been crafted with close-to-home materials; and you’ll find the same commitment to regional sourcing at its mod-Icelandic restaurant. Soaring picture windows in convivial living areas and bedrooms watch over the peaceful coastline, while adventurous outings to lava tunnels, geothermal lagoons and stalactite-contoured caves bring the tempo back up.

Need to know

Rooms

79, including nine suites.

Check–Out

11am; check-in, 3pm. Both are flexible on request, subject to availability and an extra charge.

More details

Rates at Black Sand Hotel include a Nordic-style breakfast buffet with freshly baked bread and pastries, local cheeses, smoked salmon, yoghurt, fruit and hot dishes.

Also

Six Superior rooms have been adapted with roll-in showers, grab bars and extra space, plus the communal areas are all accessible. However, navigating beyond the hotel in a wheelchair may be trickier, given the rugged terrain.

Please note

The spa and gym are still being built, expected to open in late summer 2026, so there’s some work taking place around the hotel.

At the hotel

Charged laundry service and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV, air-conditioning, tea- and coffee-making kit, minibar, bathrobes, slippers and Comfort Zone bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Black Sand Hotel promises rooms with a view: most watch over the Atlantic Sea, others look out to the mountains behind. Cosy King Rooms bring warmth — in palette and feel — with wooden walls and soft draping, a contrast to the shores the hotel is named after. For an extra romantic retreat, plump for the Executive Suite, which has a baby grand piano ready for beach-backed serenades.

Spa

A spa and gym are in the works, set to open late summer 2026.

Packing tips

The hotel may be beachfront, but this isn’t your classic coastal stay — opt for your best Gorpcore threads over a bikini. You might like a trusty eye mask in summer, when the midnight sun shines for most of the day (and night).

Also

The hotel's name is true to its otherworldly setting on the black-sand shores of Iceland’s southern coast. However, this isn’t a swimming spot — if the weather complies, you’re welcome to stroll down and explore, but you’ll have to stay on land.

Pet‐friendly

Only service dogs are allowed at Black Sand Hotel. See more pet-friendly hotels in Ölfus Region.

Children

Welcome, but this Icelandic retreat is better suited to older children. Baby cots can be provided, Superior rooms have sofa-beds, and interconnecting rooms are available on request.

Sustainability efforts

Black Sand Hotel sources its building materials, staff and restaurant ingredients as locally as possible; and to minimise environmental impact, they reduced the intended size of the hotel by half. These initiatives are bolstered by a geothermal heating system, energy-saving devices, minimal plastic use and organic bath products from Comfort Zone.

Food and Drink

Top Table

With lofty windows wrapping three sides of the restaurant, you’ll get glimpses of the coast from almost any table.

Dress Code

Clean lines and natural tones will match these confidently muted interiors.

Hotel restaurant

Ómur Restaurant overlooks the black-sand beach and Atlantic Sea through its wraparound, floor-to-ceiling windows — a dramatic screensaver that’s matched in theatrics only by chef Hugi Rafn Stefánsson’s artful creations. Polished menus spotlight Icelandic ingredients, which are sourced as locally as possible, and the house favourite is a grilled halibut crudo with strawberry umeboshi and lime cream. Breakfast is a Nordic-style spread with freshly baked breads, pastries and treats, plus smoked salmon, fruit, yoghurt and cooked-to-order hot dishes.

Hotel bar

The restaurant’s bar is a considered space with cosy lounge seating, primed for pre- or post-dinner cocktails. There’s also a light menu of snacks available throughout the day for when the main kitchen is closed.

Last orders

Ómur Restaurant serves breakfast from 7am to 10am, and dinner between 6pm and 9pm. The bar opens from 1pm to 11pm.

Room service

You can order dishes from the bar menu between 1pm and 8.30pm.

Planes

Keflavik International Airport is under 90 minutes’ drive from the hotel; staff can arrange private transfers on request.

Automobiles

Put someone else in the driving seat with hotel-organised tours and transfers. Should you bring your own wheels, Reykjavík is a 50-minute drive away and there’s free parking at Black Sand.

Worth getting out of bed for

Iceland’s one-of-a-kind landscapes have made it a go-to film spot, and you’ll get your fair share of cinematic snapshots at Black Sand Hotel. They’ll primarily be within the action genre: staff can arrange guided excursions to the Raufarhólshellir, a lava-tunnel cave with stalactites, and Thríhnúkagígur Volcano, where you can explore the dormant magma chamber; as well as helicopter tours over glaciers and kayaking in Stokkseyri. The country’s big-hitters, such as the Golden Circle’s Thingvellir National Park and Gullfoss waterfall, striking Kerið Crater and geothermal Laugarás Lagoon, are within reach and promise adrenaline-filled days out.

Local restaurants

Due to the hotel’s remote setting, there are limited options for dining nearby. Selfoss is your closest town, a 15-minute drive away, and its Food Hall is home to a selection of round-the-world and regional restaurants.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this coastal hotel in the Ölfus Region and unpacked their 66º North fleeces and local liquorice, a full account of their bathed-in-nature break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Black Sand Hotel in Iceland…

Fire and ice come to mind when thinking about Iceland's dramatic backdrops — lava tunnels and magma chambers standing in opposition to stalactites and glaciers. Similarly striking elements characterise Black Sand Hotel, on the island’s peppery southern shores.

Slick, stone interiors reference your setting’s colour palette, but the ambience is much warmer — thanks to open fireplaces, caramel-leather sofas and welcoming staff. Its modern restaurant plates up soul-nourishing Icelandic fare; its bar, ice-cool cocktails. The bedrooms are dressed in wood and earthy hues, bringing a contrasting cosiness to the coastal panoramas just beyond your picture window.

Surrounding wilderness balances out the calm, away-from-it-all feel at Black Sand Hotel, bringing ample opportunity for thrill-seeking adventures, bucket-list nature spots and fresh-air fixes. The Blue Lagoon, Golden Circle and central Reykjavík are all within day-tripping distance, but you might find that your host's restorative, do-nothing approach wins over.
