More details
Rates at Black Sand Hotel include a Nordic-style breakfast buffet with freshly baked bread and pastries, local cheeses, smoked salmon, yoghurt, fruit and hot dishes.
Also
Six Superior rooms have been adapted with roll-in showers, grab bars and extra space, plus the communal areas are all accessible. However, navigating beyond the hotel in a wheelchair may be trickier, given the rugged terrain.
Please note
The spa and gym are still being built, expected to open in late summer 2026, so there’s some work taking place around the hotel.
At the hotel
Charged laundry service and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV, air-conditioning, tea- and coffee-making kit, minibar, bathrobes, slippers and Comfort Zone bath products.
Our favourite rooms
Black Sand Hotel promises rooms with a view: most watch over the Atlantic Sea, others look out to the mountains behind. Cosy King Rooms bring warmth — in palette and feel — with wooden walls and soft draping, a contrast to the shores the hotel is named after. For an extra romantic retreat, plump for the Executive Suite, which has a baby grand piano ready for beach-backed serenades.
Spa
A spa and gym are in the works, set to open late summer 2026.
Packing tips
The hotel may be beachfront, but this isn’t your classic coastal stay — opt for your best Gorpcore threads over a bikini. You might like a trusty eye mask in summer, when the midnight sun shines for most of the day (and night).
Also
The hotel's name is true to its otherworldly setting on the black-sand shores of Iceland’s southern coast. However, this isn’t a swimming spot — if the weather complies, you’re welcome to stroll down and explore, but you’ll have to stay on land.
Pet‐friendly
Only service dogs are allowed at Black Sand Hotel. See more pet-friendly hotels in Ölfus Region.
Children
Welcome, but this Icelandic retreat is better suited to older children. Baby cots can be provided, Superior rooms have sofa-beds, and interconnecting rooms are available on request.
Sustainability efforts
Black Sand Hotel sources its building materials, staff and restaurant ingredients as locally as possible; and to minimise environmental impact, they reduced the intended size of the hotel by half. These initiatives are bolstered by a geothermal heating system, energy-saving devices, minimal plastic use and organic bath products from Comfort Zone.
