Each room is named for a member of the Coppola family and features terracotta tiles and weighty salta blankets. We prefer the privacy of the largest room, Francis. Set apart from the main building, it has a king-size bed and private garden balcony with a breakfast table. Pen your own Oscar-worthy screenplay at the dark-wood desk.

Poolside

The small, unheated pool is perfect for a cooling dip, and though there's no room for loungers, it's a welcome addition to the garden.

Packing tips

Pack lightly to leave room for finds from Palermo Soho’s posh boutiques. Bring mosquito spray for the garden and floral prints to complement the blooms. Riding boots will help if you plan to make off like a gaucho across the grassy pampas.

Children

Cots for babies are free. With two days’ notice, babysitting can be arranged for $15 an hour.

Planes

Ezeiza International Airport is a 50-minute drive away; the domestic Jorge Newberry is 20 minutes away by car.

Walk eight blocks and you’ll reach the Metro, from where you can take line D to the centre of Buenos Aires.

Worth getting out of bed for

Palermo Soho is the heart of Buenos Aires’ shopping district. Browse the boutiques for unique clothes and shoes. Calma Chica is a haven for homewares, including cowhide rugs, tabletop trinkets and locally crafted leather bags. Don’t tell the Italians, but Argentina has mastered creamy, cool gelato. Taste for yourself at Persicco, which scoops densely cocoa-packed dark chocolate and tart, icy lemon. With a cone in hand, stroll through the adjacent parks or over to the riverfront. Museo de Arte Popular José Hernández has a fine collection of Argentine handicrafts, while FOLA Fototeca Latinoamericana captures the country's eye for photography. Paseo el Rosedal is a pleasant flowery spot to picnic in; less so, Recoleta Cemetery, but it's earned notoriety as the final resting place of Eva Perón.

Local restaurants

When in the land of beefy asados, be sure to bring your appetite for meat. La Cabrera is one of the best and most popular, due in no small part to its plate-dwarfing portions of steak, sausages and ribs. You won't miss Cabernet, which has been stylishly graffittied on the outside and primped up with plants on the inside; it's a romantic bohemian spot with a tempting array of pastas, seafood and meats.

Local bars

Behind the enormous doors of an old town house 10 minutes from the hotel lurks the hip little Ocho7ocho. There’s an element of surprise involved – you have to ring the bell (the ideal time is around 1am) and hope to be let in. If you are allowed past the threshold, you’ll find elegant cocktails and a cool crowd.

There’s no way you can forget your Argentine setting, thanks to Be Jardin Escondido by Coppola’s scattering of texture-rich locally made cushions, rugs and wall hangings, and sultry South American colour scheme. Russet reds, earthy hues, pinks and mustard yellows enliven the neutral tones. The interiors blend comfort and style – sink-into leather sofas, vintage trunks, terracotta-tiled floors topped with traditional rugs and cowhide, and beds dressed in velvety sheets and weighty hand-woven blankets. No wonder Coppola kept this place all to himself when he wrote the script for Tetro. Be Jardin Escondido is an idyllic setting for your own masterpiece; its peaceful, quiet quarters coloured by plants and flowers, and the comfortable but cool interiors decorated with antique wooden furniture.
