Style

Minimal Mexican

Setting

Palm-studded beach sanctum

Baja Club Hotel is a 1910 villa and modern extension that’s been given a marvellously minimalist twist, set on the palm-lined Malecón in Mexico’s La Paz. The original colonial-style house, together with its four-storey addition, form a border around a spacious patio of pergolas, trees and potted plants. Inside, however, simplicity doesn’t just reign, it rules with an iron fist. The decor takes its cues from a Mad Men-style ultra-minimalism, with dark-wood cabinetry and headboards, white bed linens and dark bathroom tiles. Candy-striped seat covers on balconies and terraces provide rare playful flourishes. That’s not to say Baja Club is in any way dour: tucked away in a charming walled garden is the photo-ready pool, and right outside is a stunning sandy beach and the relaxed town of La Paz itself. It may lack overt embellishment and fanfare, but if this is the simple life, we’ll take it.

Our favourite rooms

We were taken by the grand ceilings in the garden room, complete with its own outdoor seating spot, as well as the elevated ocean view from the more modern, third-floor balcony room. Or if privacy with a view is non-negotiable, we’d plump for a terrace suite: the large private terrace is the ideal setting for a peaceful meal with the ocean laid out before you.

The inviting outdoor pool sits in a separate walled garden off the main patio. It has three depths and is open all day for gentle laps in the sun. There’s also a lovely public beach right opposite the hotel entrance.

Hotel bar

The Baja Club bar, located next to the restaurant dining room, serves local natural wines, creative cocktails and snacks from 1pm to 11pm. To one side, there’s a glossy, red-tiled bar, to the other, mint-hued banquette seating and low, round-backed chairs, all presided over by wood beams, soft pendant lighting and whirling ceiling fans to keep you cool. You can spill out into the patio area too, but at sunset head on up to the rooftop terrace. Order your drink and look on as sun and water slowly meet.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this peerless coastal hotel in La Paz and unpacked their Mexican crafts, a full account of their laidback beachside break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Baja Club Hotel in La Paz…

If you like your hotels ornately embellished and gold trimmed, look the other way now. This singular La Paz property exemplifies restrained, minimalist chic; still fancy, but without the fuss. If you demand a little drama, choose a garden room in the old villa, where you have higher ceilings and private garden spaces. For a view of those oh-so-close waves, seek out a third-floor balcony room or suite in the new building, whose occasional Modernist-style curves give it some extra cachet. The pool, tucked away in a walled garden of preserved red brick, with a soft sand and pebble border, is easy on the eye, and the patio pergola is the best spot for feasting on Greek-inspired dishes from the kitchen. The hotel sits in central La Paz, an unspoiled beach town with great restaurants and shops, a world away from the resort energy of Cabo.
