Awasi Atacama

Built of stone, adobe and wood, these suites (60-67sq m) are set in seclusion across a road from the main hotel. Guests slumber on a king-size bed (or twins, on request) under a thatched roof. Each suite has underfloor heating, stylish wood and rattan furnishings and a large marble ensuite bathroom kitted out with a bath tub and an indoor-outdoor shower. Sit on the private terrace and order some Chilean red, there are alpaca blankets for when it gets chilly and handy bits of kit for outdoor expeditions. All suites have tea- and coffee-making facilities, an iPod dock, free bottled water, and handy extras for outdoor pursuits (signature lip balm, walking sticks). WiFi is available, if infrequently, and these rooms can fit one extra bed on request.

These circular hideaways (45sq m) were inspired by pre-Incan dwellings. A local historian worked with architects to ensure authenticity, and the vermillion-hued adobe walls, thatched roofs and woven wall hangings all ring true; however, modern travellers will be pleased to hear that there are king-size beds, 21st-century marble bathroom, each with a bath tub and indoor-outdoor shower, underfloor heating and an iPod dock. WiFi is infrequently available, too. Each cabana has a private terrace, with alpaca blankets for cooler desert nights, and within there are tea- and coffee-making facilities, free bottled water, and air-conditioning. Twin-bedded cabanas are available on request.
