Setting

Cappadocia's volcanic valleys

You might be excused for going full cave-dweller mode in Avantgarde Refined Cappadocia, just west of Ürgüp’s ancient centre. Its cavernous rooms are carved into volcanic rock, but more civilised exploits await beyond your grotto. Bliss out with a traditional Turkish hammam in the spa; dine on wood-fired pide in the pine-shaded courtyard; and wake up to sunrise yoga, as hundreds of hot-air balloons sprinkle cerulean skies overhead.

Our favourite rooms

Cave-dwelling fantasies are fulfilled in every one of Avantgarde Refined Cappadocia’s rooms and suites, each hewn into ancient volcanic rock. Sprawl out in a Spacious Cave Suite, or go with the Golden Hour Suite for its private terrace with sunset views.

Poolside

Snag a day-bed by the outdoor pool to soak up that endless Cappadocian sunshine and sip craft cocktails between slow laps.

Spa

The Rea Well-Being spa promises 600 square metres of steam room, sauna, hammam and treatment suits, plus a serene tea room and garden in which to take in valley views over a restorative cup of oolong.

Packing tips

Enormous Jackie O sunglasses for style points (with the side benefit of protection against the glare from all that volcanic rock); a solid zoom lens for capturing balloon sky ballets in all their technicolour glory.

Also

The spa complex includes a state-of-the-art gym and a yoga and Pilates studio; you can also stretch out at the hotel’s Avantgarde Valley, which promises meditative sunrise views across the lunar landscapes below.

Pet‐friendly

Great news for Marmaduke, Tibbles and Lucifer: pets are welcome for free in all rooms and suites at Avantgarde Refined Cappadocia. See more pet-friendly hotels in Cappadocia.

Children

Little Smiths are welcome, with pool access, plus a PlayStation, card games and art materials to enjoy. Suites accommodate an extra bed, which is free for under-fives or €70 for kids aged six to 11 (€100 for over-12s).

Sustainability efforts

The sun (almost) always shines on Cappadocia, and the hotel has taken full advantage, harnessing solar power for underfloor heating and LED bulbs with motion sensors. Renovations have been sensitive, using endemic plant species in landscaping and sourcing local handicrafts and building materials where possible. The bar and restaurant favour local and sustainable produce, with any food waste collected by the Nevşehir Municipality for use as animal feed.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Arrive early to nab terrace seats. Your reward: sweet, pine-laced breezes and Cappadocia views to dine for.

Dress Code

Avantgarde Refined Cappadocia leans smart casual. Bold prints and block colours make selfies pop against the hotel’s dazzling facade, but layer-up for late-night alfresco dining.

Hotel restaurant

Ace Restaurant’s take on modern Turkish cuisine includes imaginative salads, house hummus and wood-fired pide, all made using locally sourced ingredients. Dine on the courtyard terrace in summer for pine-shaded corners and views across that one-of-a-kind alien terrain; in winter, retreat indoors where low, vaulted ceilings and an extensive wine cellar help stave off the chill.

Hotel bar

Open from morning until midnight, the Courtyard Bar & Lounge serves drinks, snacks and afternoon tea. Grab a seat around the fire pit at sunset to sample the signature cocktail, a fragrant (and punchy) blend of tequila, mezcal, vermouth, lavender and jasmine.

Last orders

Breakfast is from 7am to 10.30am, and an all-day menu is served between 11.30am and 11pm; the courtyard bar keeps the party going until midnight.

Room service

There’s a dedicated room service menu, available around the clock.

Address
Avantgarde Refined Cappadocia
Duayeri İstiklal Caddesi 89 Ürgüp
Nevşehir
50400
Turkey

Avantgarde Refined Cappadocia lies among otherworldly Anatolian rock formations on the western edge of Ürgüp in Turkey.

Planes

Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport is a 45-minute drive from the hotel, and Kayseri Airport is around an hour away by car. Staff can arrange transfers from either on request.

Automobiles

Cappadocia’s dreamlike landscapes invite deeper exploration. Those who balk at cycling the region’s somewhat challenging peaks and troughs can rent a car at the airport. There’s free valet parking at the hotel.

Worth getting out of bed for

Anyone who says they’ve ‘done’ Cappadocia without taking a balloon ride over those eye-popping lunar landscapes is talking a load of hot air. Secure definitive bragging rights on a sunrise soar high above the uncanny valleys, for aerial views of fairy chimneys, whipped-up meringue peaks of volcanic tuff and other ancient — and utterly alien — rock formations.

You can take a closer look on surprisingly manageable hikes through Pigeon Valley: eyes peeled for ancient dovecotes carved into the rock faces. Or hit up the Red Valley, where blood-red skies turn fang-like rock formations crimson at sunset. Just outside Ürgüp, the ‘Three Beauties’ fairy chimneys are a photo-op rite of passage for any snap-happy visitor to the area.

Avantgarde Refined Cappadocia also organises wine-tasting experiences in the region’s celebrated vineyards, as well as the chance to take home wonky souvenirs cast by your own hands at traditional pottery workshops in nearby Avanos.

Local restaurants

There are several dining options in town, but Virtus at the Sacred House Hotel stands out from the Ürgüp crowd for its palatial, mediaeval-style bombast – all soaring arches, spiralling columns and antique silverware — and modern take on traditional (and often long-forgotten) Anatolian and Mediterranean dishes. As evidenced by its name, the nearby Barbarian Medieval Tavern is a little more forthright about its USPs, with mead, coal-fired meats and rowdy tavern tables sure to deliver a knight to remember (sorry).

Local cafés

You won’t struggle to hunt down your morning cup of joe in Ürgüp, where a proliferation of coffee shops runs the full gamut from the earthy, bitter punch of the Turkish brew to sweet mocha lattes with whipped cream. Hit up Ceviz Cafe, the Poem Coffee Shop or Espressolab for your fix.

Local bars

Not only does Angels & The Searchers at Sacred House promise a solid cocktail list and some of the most comically opulent decor in town, its location a mere five-minute stumble from Avantgarde Refined Cappadocia is also a big win. Slightly further afield, the Han is where it's at for hookah and Turkish mezze, while soul-stirring sundowner views at Rooftop by Castle are well worth the five-mile ride west out of Ürgüp.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from hewn-into-volcanic-rock hotel, and shared ballooning selfies on their socials, a full account of their cave-dwelling adventure will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Avantgarde Refined Cappadocia…

If you’ve ever dreamt of waking up in a cave and stepping outside at dawn to be greeted by a sky filled with hundreds of balloons, well, you’ve come to the right place. Avantgarde Refined Cappadocia’s rooms and suites are carved into a wall of the region’s ancient volcanic rock, but its mod-cons — Diptyque bath products, soothing spa, yoga studio — are something of an upgrade to early cave-dwellings.

In front of the hotel lies a pretty courtyard with a pool and serene tea garden, the air heady with the scent of towering pines, native flowers and freshly baked pide (aka Turkish pizza). But the real magic happens up in the Avantgarde Valley, a shallow plateau atop the hotel, from where Cappadocia’s wild landscapes are revealed in all their weird and wonderfully warped glory. Gaze out across vineyards and fairy chimneys over a signature mezcal-and-lavender cocktail, or beat the crowds by sneaking up for a spot of bird (and balloon) watching at sunrise.
