Finnish fell country

Things are looking up at Arcora Boutique Hotel & Villas, a family-run wilderness retreat in Finnish Lapland where the Northern Lights come with bedtime alerts. Nordic good looks meet full-throttle cosiness in fire-warmed suites and sky-gazing villas (some with saunas), and a rooftop infinity pool brings fresh meaning to chilling out. Add reindeer adventures, husky sledding, sauna rituals and forest-foraged dining, and this is one Arctic circle worth joining.

Helipad, telescope-to-borrow, bakery, charged laundry service and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: smart TV, climate control, minibar, coffee machine, tea-making kit, free bottled water, seasonal outdoor gear, bathrobes, slippers and Bulgari bath products.

Our favourite rooms

All rooms put Lapland’s enchanting landscape in the limelight, with uninterrupted views across forest and fell, but Sky Villa Antti is the real star turn. Its north-facing bedroom has a panoramic skylight for watching the aurora dance overhead, and a bath tub for stellar soaks. Deluxe Villa Jouni glows in a different way, with a private sauna, semi-outdoor hot tub deck and fireplace keeping things suitably toasty after dark.

Poolside

On the spa’s rooftop, the heated infinity pool keeps things steamy even when Lapland is deep in the minus figures. Soak up unbroken Arctic views from the water and, with luck, the Northern Lights overhead. All are welcome, 3.30pm to 6.30pm; it’s adults-only between 7pm and 11pm.

Spa

Wellness at Arcora Boutique Hotel & Villas comes with a distinctly wild streak. Up on the top floor, the spa looks out to the fells: warm up after Arctic exploits in any of the three Finnish saunas and outdoor hot tub. Treatments forage from the far north, too: the 90-minute Aurora Embrace works cloudberry, sea buckthorn and spruce into a warm aromatherapy massage and facial, and Sacred Stones brings hot rocks into play for deep, post-expedition thawing. There’s a 24-hour gym for less leisurely exertions, but with snowshoeing, skiing and ice swimming outside, the wilderness makes a persuasive workout buddy.

Packing tips

Seasonal outdoor gear comes with your room, or you can upgrade your Arctic armour for €441 each and Arcora will have a premium set — lightweight down jacket, merino-wool base layers and socks — waiting for you on arrival. It’s yours to take home afterwards.

Also

Leave the night watch to technology: download Arcora’s Northern Lights app and you’ll get alerts when the aurora makes an appearance.

Pet‐friendly

Dogs are welcome to stay in one Deluxe Villa Jouni or Sky Villa Antti. See more pet-friendly hotels in Finnish Lapland.

Children

All ages are welcome, with interconnecting suites and sofa-beds available on request making group set-ups easy. Nannies can be arranged with advance notice for an additional fee.

Sustainability efforts

Sustainability was considered from the ground up at Arcora, with locally sourced materials, geothermal energy and architecture designed in harmony with the surrounding Arctic landscape. In the kitchen, Finnish ingredients such as reindeer, fish, berries and wild mushrooms feature heavily while keeping the overall footprint light, aided further by glass water bottles, energy-saving lighting, recycling and composting.

Food and Drink

Top Table

The window tables win out, especially with aurora appearances on the cards.

Dress Code

Leave the technical layers to thaw; this is smart cashmere territory.

Hotel restaurant

Restaurant 8 takes its name — and culinary cues — from Lapland’s eight seasons, with chef Arto Rastas putting Finnish flavours centre stage, including local reindeer and fish. The magical surroundings are kept firmly in view throughout the eight-course tasting menu: timber-clad walls soar towards the rafters, an open fire supplies the glow and vast windows frame the forest beyond. Kajo Bar & Artisan Bakery is the more laidback option, baking fresh bread and traditional pastries in-house each day alongside lighter lunches. From 3pm, its signature Nordic afternoon tea gives the British ritual an Arctic accent.

Hotel bar

Hotel bar Kajo Lobby Bar is the more casual of the two: coffee comes with still-warm bread, pastries and light bites from the hotel’s bakery. Upstairs, Pyry Champagne Bar is where things get fizzy, with big Arctic views and a cellar spanning grand maisons, limited labels and lesser-known finds.

Last orders

Breakfast is served at Restaurant 8 from 7am to 11am; lunch is at Kajo Bar & Bakery from noon to 2.30pm. Afternoon tea is from 3pm to 5pm and dinner from 5pm to 11pm.

Room service

Order to your room from 6am to 11pm to dine while duvet wrapped.

Location

Address
Arcora Boutique Hotel & Villas
Porotie 1
Muonio
99300
Finland

North of the Arctic Circle in western Finnish Lapland, Arcora Boutique Hotel & Villas’ only neighbours are the forests and fells of Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park.

Planes

Most international travellers will connect through Helsinki, which has regular onward flights to Kittilä Airport (around a 50-minute drive from the hotel). Enontekiö Airport is another option, which is just over an hour by road. Arcora can organise transfers on request for €720 (one-way, for up to four passengers).

Trains

There’s no railway station in Muonio; the nearest useful railhead is Kolari, served by overnight trains from Helsinki. From here, seasonal buses run towards Muonio and Torassieppi; the hotel can also arrange a transfer from the station.

Automobiles

Driving in winter this far north is not for everyone, but if you’re undaunted, rent some wheels at Kittilä Airport, to explore Lapland under your own steam. You’ll mostly follow Route 79 towards Muonio, and there’s free private parking 100 metres from the hotel.

Other

Arcora has its own helipad if you’re planning to arrive directly by air.

Worth getting out of bed for

Winter puts Arcora Boutique Hotel & Villas firmly into adventure mode. Head out on husky and reindeer safaris, skim across frozen lakes by snowmobile, drill through sub-zero surfaces for a spot of ice fishing or chase the Northern Lights into the night by foot or sled. Nearby Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park rewards a slower pace: Arcora leads guided snowshoeing outings through its powder-blanketed forests and open fells, and the wider park has more than 500 kilometres of cross-country ski trails. At Christmas, friendly ‘elves’ lead families to Santa’s private cabin for fireside stories, festive wishes and gifts.

Come summer, the white-out turns green and the midnight sun keeps the great outdoors open late. The park is criss-crossed with hiking and cycling paths, with guided e-bike rides among the ways to cover more ground; berry and mushroom foraging, birdwatching, fishing and canoeing provide gentler pursuits.

Local restaurants

Remote by design, Arcora keeps you well fed with several restaurants and bars of its own. For a change of scene, the hotel’s authentic kota dinners are served even deeper into the wild, where a private chef cooks four northern-inspired courses over an open fire in a traditional wood-burner-warmed hut.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Arcora Boutique Hotel & Villas in Finnish Lapland…

Finnish Lapland has no shortage of glass-roofed stays, but newcomer Arcora Boutique Hotel & Villas is aiming higher than the familiar igloo formula. Opening in December 2026, it’s the latest chapter for Harriniva Hotels & Safaris, the Pietikäinen family’s third generation Lapland business, which has been showing adventurers around these parts since 1973. PAVE Architects, based in northern Finland, drew inspiration from Pallastunturi’s pine forest and boulder-strewn terrain, working wood, stone, natural tones and huge windows into a sleeker strain of Arctic design.

In the standout Sky Villa Antti, a panoramic window all but dissolves the structure above the bed into the northern sky; when the aurora appears, nature supplies its own glow-in-the-dark ceiling. Having spent more than 50 years getting guests out into the wilderness, whether by husky sled, reindeer sleigh or snowmobile, the Pietikäinens are now offering equally compelling reasons to retreat inside.
