Yoga room, charged laundry service and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: smart TV, tea-making kit, free glass-bottled water and organic bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Your days may take on a high-octane edge, with lofty hikes and adventurous escapades, but downtime is just as privileged at Antigua Casona San Blas. Some bedrooms overlook the lavender garden — with (seasonal) freshly picked stems placed in your room — and balconied Superiors are well placed for admiring this lilac-hued haven. The Xapiri Ground Art Suites are a collaboration with a non-profit organisation that works to protect the Amazon rainforest and its native communities. These suites are a celebration of local artwork, landscapes and craftsmanship.

Spa

You’ll find a clutch of altitude antidotes at the spa, where acclimatising comes in the form of sauna spells, Jacuzzi dips and Andean-herb-infused massages. The hotel’s hyperbaric chamber is a fast-track way to adjust to Cusco’s sky-high setting, and reflexology sessions or in-room candlelit soaks soothe any Inca Trail-fatigued limbs.

Packing tips

No need to bring your sleep accoutrements for post-hike unwinding: evening pampering is provided via bathside candles, a hot water bottle and nighttime tea. If you’re looking for a new playlist, the hotel shares theirs on Spotify.

Also

Take a deep breath and stretch out at the plant-adorned Exhale yoga studio; there’s a calendar of daily classes or book in for a private session (both are available for an additional charge).

Children

Welcome. A free baby cot for one under-two can be added to each room.

Sustainability efforts

Actions speak louder than words, an ethos adopted at B Corp-certified Antigua Casona San Blas. Solar panels provide energy; single-use plastic is eschewed in favor of glass options; furniture is crafted out of closely sourced materials, and all waste is recycled or composted. Your green-minded hosts offset their carbon footprint through donations and reforestation projects, plus the hotel partners with local charities and supports community initiatives.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Bag the banquette for breakfast-time debriefs; come evening, take your aperitif to the sofas on the terrace which are warmed by two outdoor fireplaces.

Dress Code

Cozy is key as mornings and evenings are often cooler — show off your new alpaca-wool knits or high-tech hiking threads.

Hotel restaurant

Putting a contemporary spin on Cusqueña cuisine, Piedra & Sal pays homage to the region’s picanterías — a traditional lunchtime restaurant that typically pours chicha corn beer. Chef Raul Mestas and his team use a batán (stone tool) and slow-cooking methods to prepare family favorites. Breakfast is included with your stay and days start with cacao-dusted French toast or spiced huevos rancheros, alongside freshly brewed coffee, sourced from a nearby farm. Hearty lunches and candlelit dinners spotlight mountain-reared meat, Nikkei cuisine and Peruvian staples, such as seco norteño (lamb shank in a cilantro sauce) or ají la gallina tacos (yellow-chilli chicken).

Hotel bar

Swing by the restaurant’s gilded bar and ask Alfredo for his expert view on Pisco-laced cocktails, locally brewed cervezas or Peruvian vintages, which you’ll find lining the armchair-dotted wine cellar. You can justify a few Cusco Sours — they’re infused with coca leaves, a natural remedy for altitude sickness.

Last orders

Piedra & Sal serves breakfast between 6am and 10.30am; lunch is from noon to 5pm, and for dinner, it’s 5pm to 10pm. The bar pours from noon until 10pm.

Room service

You can order dishes from the restaurant’s menu to your door between 6am and 10pm.

Worth getting out of bed for

After a recalibrating stint in the sauna or hyperbaric chamber at Antigua Casona San Blas, you’ll be raring to go for outdoorsy jaunts. Staff can arrange paddleboard or kayaking tours on Piuray Lagoon, which is framed by snow-capped peaks. Head on a full-day hike in the Sacred Valley, where glaciers, waterfalls and archeological sites are as breathtaking as the heights, or explore routes around Cusco on old Incan trails towards Inkilltambo. But in this neck of the woods, the star of the show — it is a world wonder after all — is Machu Picchu, which from Cusco is reachable by road or multi-day hiking expeditions.

Local restaurants

Jack’s Café is a lively all-day bistro with activity-fuelling breakfasts, tempting sweet treats and hearty evening meals. Bundles of dried chillis hang from the ceiling like chandeliers at Cicciolina, where dishes pack just as much of a punch with designed-to-share tapas and South American flavors. Republica del Pisco pairs regional classics, such as ceviche and lomo saltado, with international plates in a casona-style dining room.

Local cafés

Mornings of homemade pastries and specialty brews at Three Monkeys Coffee Cusco are particularly meditative, with its washed walls and minimalist interiors. Terrace-top Flora is proud of its roots (literally): you’ll find hibiscus-art-topped lattes alongside all-natural drinks, smoothies and brunches.

Local bars

You’ll put the spirit into spiritual at La Bruja Verde Apothecary Lounge, a bewitching bar with mixologist-made cocktails, potent tinctures and botanical workshops. Lodge-like Garibaldi Cocktail Bar is a snug watering hole for post-mountain refreshment, and the White Negroni is especially thirst-quenching.

Feeling good is a considered criterion when choosing your next destination, and Antigua Casona San Blas scores high in that department. This cosseting crashpad takes self-care seriously: gentle yoga sessions; lavender-scented fireside night caps, and nourishing, Peruvian-leaning fare. Hone your breathwork in the altitude-countering hyperbaric chamber or restore hike-weary muscles with a botanical massage. Or you could bypass the spa entirely, by asking staff to upgrade your in-room bath tub with candles and soothing salts.

Doing good is held in equal esteem: this B Corp-certified basecamp gives as much as it takes from its community, partnering with local charities and organizations to offset its carbon footprint and protect the natural environment. If you’re staying in a Xapiri Ground Art Suite, adorned with handcrafted furnishings and native artwork, you’ll sleep extra well at night — this non-profit works to protect Amazonian culture. As well as a clean conscience, relaxing herbal teas and hot water bottles help, too...
