Our favourite rooms

All rooms are similar in design with airy neutral tones, light wood flooring and floor-to-ceiling windows that pulls the natural beauty of the island into focus. The Ocean View Suites are a knock-out; spread across the second and third floors, each has a private furnished terrace with elevated ocean views, a large open-plan lounge and a freestanding bath tub. For young adults and children, the Guestrooms make a fine choice – located above the kitchen and entertainment areas, they allow parents to keep a close eye while unwinding in the evenings.

Poolside

Each of the two villas are serviced by a freshwater infinity-edge pool, both of which are enwreathed by hot pink bougainvillaea on one side and a procession of sun-facing loungers on the other.

Spa

Guests can take advantage of up to six spa treatments a day at the on-site spa room, with holistic, deep-tissue, head and foot massages to choose from. Those looking for a more active release can hit the fully equipped gym, take a round on the Peloton or brush up their serve with professional tennis lessons.

Children

All ages welcome. There’s free babysitting for up to four hours and daily children’s activities including arts and crafts, kite making, cooking and baking classes. Extra beds are $220 a night for those aged 6-12, $137.50 for ages 2-5 and free for infants.

Best for

Children of any age are welcome, though kids over five are best placed to take full advantage of the activities on offer.

Recommended rooms

The Ocean View Suites are best for smaller Smiths who can sleep close to mum and dad on a rollaway bed. For teens, the Guestroom strikes the right balance – they gain a little independence while parents gain a cautious vantage point, just in case.

There’s a daily children’s activity program to keep youngsters entertained with activities like face painting, cooking and baking classes, arts and crafts, kite making and flying, shuffleboard and other games.

Sustainability efforts

Àni Anguilla is striving to become a plastic-free stay; all amenities are refillable and water fountains encourage guests to top-up their bottles rather than replace. There’s a chef’s garden on site, where he grows herbs and vegetables to be used in the kitchen, and what’s not produced there is sourced locally. Food waste is managed through composting which helps to keep the gardens lush and the majority of staff are hired from within the local community.

Take coffee on the Turtle Bay Deck; breakfast at the main pavilion, lunch on the terrace and dinner at the rooftop lounge – each guarantees wow-worthy ocean views.

Dress Code

Come as you are – though with backdrops as bonny as this one it’d be a shame not to dress up every now and then.

Hotel restaurant

There’s no fixed restaurant as such, rather, dining space can be set up just about anywhere on site. We recommend starting your day at the main pavilion which benefits from a live cooking station (so you can request your eggs however you like them) before going in for a mid-afternoon helping of homemade sorbet and freshly baked cakes. In keeping with the resort’s tailormade ethos, guests will be consulted ahead of time about their gastronomic preferences and dietary requirements, from which head chef Karan Kumar will devise personalised menus for throughout your stay. Heads up: his speciality is in Asian-influenced cuisine so don’t miss the chance to sample some of his hand-rolled sushi along with Caribbean classics like the resort’s signature crayfish. A beachside barbecue lunch is also included once per booking; a day of wining and dining on the resort’s private bay. They’ll even bring kayaks, snorkelling equipment and stand-up paddle boards to keep the little ones entertained in between courses.

Hotel bar

You’ll find the bar stationed on the ground floor of the South villa; a large open-plan space peppered with objets d’art where cream lounge seating and black pool tables set the tone. Floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors lead directly to the pool, but much like meals, drinks can be taken anywhere. There’s a selection of wine, beer and cocktails on offer – of which the signature rum punch is a must (when in Rome…) – as well as rum tasting sessions and mixology classes.

Last orders

Kitchen staff will generally be on hand from 7am to 11pm and meal times can be arranged as and when you predict you’ll get peckish.

Occupying an independent stretch of craggy cliffside, Àni Anguilla is tucked away on the rugged north side of the island and surrounded by secret, secluded beauty spots.

Planes

For those travelling from the UK and USA, Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport (AXA) is a 10-minute drive from the resort, served by British Airways and American Airlines who run connecting flights from most major cities. Alternatively, fly into the neighbouring Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) on Sint Maarten. The resort can arrange roundtrip transfers from either location; by car or shared shuttle boat transfer, respectively.

Automobiles

There’s a free gated car park on-site for guests, though you’re unlikely to need wheels on this compact little island of just 35 square miles – at least not of the four-wheeled kind. If you plan on exploring, the resort can provide mountain bikes for both adults and children.

Other

Private boats can be arranged from Sint Maarten for up to 34 people with rates starting from $708 for a small boat up to $1,888 for the largest.

Worth getting out of bed for

Set your out-of-office, the rainbow city is ideal for those seeking a spot of disconnected repose with no less than 33 unspoilt beaches spread across its coastline. The neighbouring Little Beach Bay is one of the island’s most coveted, which is why you’ll often spot celebs flocking there to bob along on their boats away from the paps. You’ll find a vast range of activities included in the rate; take a two-hour sunset cruise around the entire island, summon the resident DJ for a private villa party, take a Caribbean cooking class with the head chef or dust off your trainers for a guided cycling or walking tour. For an additional charge, guests can also explore a host of uninhabited cays by private yacht (Prickly Pear Cays in particular is a must – an offshore idyll peppered with pink and yellow conch shells and encircled by an pristine coral reef), take a swing at the Aurora International Golf Club, hit the waves with a professional surf instructor or learn to play the steel drums, Anguilla style. For retail therapy with a spot of culture, head to the island’s capital, The Valley, where you’ll find street food stalls, one-of-a-kind boutiques, museums and stunning colonial architecture.

Local restaurants

Arabian nights meets tropical treehouse at Veya, North Hill Village’s most sought-after spot where US import Carrie Bogar has fashioned a ‘cuisine of the sun’ with a menu that trots merrily around the globe; expect dishes like Indian spiced yellow pea soup, Korean barbecue pork tenderloin and grilled crayfish. Downstairs, at its informal sister restaurant Meze, you’ll find Moroccan small plates and grilled kebabs accompanied by nightly live music. If it's an authentic taste of Anguilla you’re after, you can’t do much better than B&D’s BBQ. This unpretentious, family-run roadside joint is somewhat of an island institution, where clued-up locals gather for convivial dining and heaped plates of fresh lobster, chicken and racks of lamb as well as the flakiest johnny cakes in town.

Local cafés

In the fishing village of Island Harbour you’ll find the unassuming French bakery Le Bon Pain where husband and wife duo Bernard and Yvonne pedal a medley of golden, flakey pastries (chocolate croissants, peach puffs, berry twists, raisin danishes, you name it), fresh-out-the-oven baguettes and a delightfully silky cafe au lait.

Local bars

Unsurprisingly, reggae is a staple at Bankie Banx’s Dune Preserve, a rustic beach-shack on the shores of Rendezvous Bay cobbled together from pieces of driftwood and shipwrecked boats. Ask for the signature Dune Shine (ginger, pineapple juice, white rum and bitters) and sit back as the sea rolls along to the soothing staccato beats. The Anguillan Bob Dylan has been known to make an appearance from time to time, too, so keep an eye (or rather, an ear) out for him as you sip. The sophisticated Rhum Room, meanwhile, is a must for aficionados of the sugary stuff with over 100 varieties of small-batch products. Don your swankiest ensemble for this one – moody lighting, navy leather and velvet seats and a humidifier for those partial to a cigar conspire to give this place the feel of a sultry private members club.

Long gone are the days of difficult group bookings and logistical hurdles, instead this profoundly private cliffside stay has every box ticked before you’ve even set foot off the plane.
