Revamped historic villa

Setting

Old Town charm

Time-tested luxuries are celebrated at Amyth of Nicosia — a historic villa turned peaceful Old Town pied-à-terre. A modern makeover honours the century-old home’s classical beauty, the restaurant’s refined Cypriot dishes spotlight produce fresh from the market, and mythology inspires the mixology at the bar. Historian-led tours unlock the city’s epoch-spanning past, but sipping island-grown wine under the shade of an olive tree, it’s clear that the key to good Mediterranean living hasn’t changed much since Aphrodite’s day.

Our favourite rooms

Any room or suite with a private terrace takes the cake — it’s hard to top a sun-warmed evening spent eyeing the terracotta roofs of the Old Town. The Luxe & Sweet One Bedroom Suite has a particularly pretty ceiling fresco, intricately painted in pistachio and periwinkle hues.

Spa

There’s no spa or gym at the hotel, but private yoga, meditation or fitness classes with a local practitioner can be arranged. You can also pick up a workout kit with an exercise mat, power bands and dumbbells from reception. Plus, the hotel has a partnership with the city’s landmark apartment building 360 Nicosia, so you can access the fitness centre, sauna, steam room, swimming pool and, crucially, the stellar views, for a daily fee of €30.

A pair of broken-in Birkenstocks will see you through from walking tour to an alfresco bottle of white.

The hotel has a number of water-saving measures in place, and uses refillable bath products.

Hotel restaurant

At Amyth Kouzina, you’ll find a polished take on traditional Cypriot and Mediterranean fare. The chef heads out to the market every morning to score the finest and freshest local produce, so you’ll want to keep an eye on the daily specials, but menu mainstays include marinated tomato with smoked aubergine and lemon-infused burrata, and wild Mediterranean red snapper with slow-cooked beans. Sweet treats are serious business here, too; save room for an almond tart jewelled with seasonal fruit.

At breakfast, things start strong with a bakery basket of fresh bread, homemade jams and raw honey; then take your pick of pomegranate-scattered Greek yoghurt, flaky filo pies, and eggs turned into an artform — scrambled with cherry tomatoes, Haliji cheese and oregano is our pick. There are plenty of plant-based options, too.

Hotel bar

In-the-know locals in search of a nightcap slip off the Old Town’s atmospheric streets to Amyth Bar. Cypriot flavours and stories underpin the craft cocktail menu; make ours the Negroni infused with cherries, ouzo and lime, which pulls inspiration from Aphrodite’s birthplace, Paphos.

Last orders

Breakfast is served at Amyth Kouzina from 7am to 10am; lunch from noon to 4pm, and dinner from 7pm to 10.30pm. The bar pours from 10am to midnight.

Room service

There’s a separate room service menu, for when you’re all snuggled up and the urge to snack strikes.

Amyth of Nicosia is set within the mediaeval Venetian walls that encircle the Old Town, surrounded by eye-catching, carefully preserved villas.

Worth getting out of bed for

The hotel can arrange guided tours with a local art historian and archaeologist. Depending on your interests, you could explore the city’s mediaeval Venetian walls, churches and mosques spanning 13 centuries, and the Archbishop’s Palace, now home to a cluster of museums including the Cyprus Folk Art Museum. For a one-off souvenir — or just to get au fait with the city’s rich contemporary art scene — Is Not Gallery and Diachroniki should also be high on your hit list.

Crossing the Green Line into Northern Cyprus is relatively straightforward, should you wish to — the border is just a few minutes from Amyth, and some of the hotel’s tours cross it. Selimiye Mosque, a 13th-century cathedral converted by the Ottomans a few hundred years later, is an interesting visit. And it’s always worth making a pitstop at a street café for baklava.

Local restaurants

Book well in advance at Beba — a cool neighbourhood restaurant that’s won a host of local regulars with its modern Cypriot menu and charcoal-fired specialities. Across town, fine-dining spot Tocayo blends Asian and Latin-American influences in finely tuned sharing dishes such as black cod yakitori and yuzu clementine ceviche. Aigaion is a reliable local taverna — take your traditional Cypriot small plates out in the leafy courtyard.

Local cafés

Pieto is the sort of place you’ll want to hang out all day. The decor is like the conservatory of a bohemian aunt, plus there’s excellent coffee, home-baked cakes likened to poetry by the locals, and five cats, all named George.

Local bars

A chic café by day — the bagels are things of beauty — Swimming Birds moonlights as a minimalist bar, with a curated wine list and a killer chocolate negroni.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this restful hotel in Nicosia and unpacked their honey and handmade lace, a full account of their history-steeped city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Amyth of Nicosia in Cyprus…

A historic villa turned peaceful Old Town pied-à-terre, Amyth of Nicosia distils the Cypriot capital to its simple sensory pleasures. Whitewashed stone walls, painted mosaics, and the odd fresco in sugared-almond hues from the original 19th-century home have all been carefully restored, offset by airy modern interiors. Mornings pass honey-slow out on the restaurant’s olive-shaded terrace, where elevated Cypriot dishes are plated with market-fresh ingredients and strong, briki-brewed coffee perfumes the air. Coax yourself into action, and there’s an archaeologist and art historian on hand to help you navigate Nicosia’s empire-spanning culture. Plunge in, knowing when you return, there’s a cherry-sweetened Negroni with your name on it.
