Our favourite rooms

Designed to bring the outdoors in, each of the earth-toned rooms at 1 Hotel Melbourne is filled with natural light, living plants, and materials that have been salvaged and restored from railway bridges and wharf timber. The city outlooks are spectacular, but the river-facing rooms edge it for us — especially those with freestanding bath tubs, like the River 2 Bed Suite.

Poolside

Set within the cocooning confines of the hotel’s spa, the indoor heated pool is kid-friendly and open around the clock.

Spa

Treatments at Bamford Wellness Spa draw on Carole Bamford’s Earth-kind and nature-driven ethos, which has been thoughtfully honed over the years since founding Daylesford Organic in the Cotswolds. Between de-stress massages and re-balancing therapies, unwind in the sauna, steam room, and hot tub, and get the body moving in the Field House gym during a one-to-one fitness session or group class with 1 Hotel’s motivational instructors.

Packing tips

Bring something to stretch out in, as there are thoughtfully placed yoga mats in each of the rooms for bedside salutations. You can pick up a reusable water bottle crafted from recycled ocean plastic in the hotel’s boutique (and fill from your in-room filtration tap) to stay hydrated in Melbourne’s heat.

Sustainability efforts

From a rooftop solar system to its glass-fronted exterior built to maximise natural daylight, 1 Hotel Melbourne makes energy-saving and water conservation in a drought-prone city look effortless from its riverside setting. The already impressive biophilic design is bolstered by the plastic-free hotel’s remarkable restoration project, which involved sensitively transforming the heritage-listed Goods Shed No5 (the last of Melbourne’s unrenovated wharfs) while salvaging and repurposing over 2,000 items, including timber, steel trusses, and window frames. The rooms are fitted with water filtration taps and stocked with eco-friendly Bamford products (also used in the all-natural spa), and the restaurant works closely with local Victoria farmers to source seasonal, organic ingredients.

Dress Code

The farm-to-table fare and rustic setting doesn’t demand anything too dressy, but it’s worth swapping the athleisurewear for linen sets come evening.

Hotel restaurant

Local farmers and fishermen supply From Here By Mike with produce that’s fresh from the land and coast, while keeping food miles to a minimum. You can expect a menu that changes with the seasons and takes inspiration from different cuisines around the world. Neighbours Café is set to become a go-to for barista made brews, herbal infusions, energy shots and cold-pressed juices alongside nourishing superfood bowls and baked goods.

Hotel bar

An intimate gathering place for botanical cocktails, Australian wines and craft beers overlooking the Yarra River, Crane Bar & Lounge is tucked into the indoor greenery on the hotel’s ground floor. Head up one floor to Upstairs for nutritious snacks, small-batch drinks and yet more verdant views.

Reflecting off the Yarra River’s steely waters, 1 Hotel Melbourne sits within the Docklands on the southwestern edge of Melbourne's CBD.

Melbourne’s international airport is just under 30 minutes by car from the hotel. 1 Hotel’s team are happy to help with transfers on request and a taxi, one way, costs around AU$80.

The hotel is a 10-minute walk from Southern Cross station, and just two minutes on foot from the city’s free tram line.

Worth getting out of bed for

There are natural attractions aplenty on 1 Hotel Melbourne’s doorstep, starting with the sprawling parkland of Seafarers Rest, which is criss-crossed with scenic paths along the Yarra River. Rent one of the hotel’s e-bicycles to wheel through the Docklands, or hop on the free City Circle Tram (which runs right past the hotel) to meander the tree-lined streets of Melbourne’s CBD. Forest bathe and birdwatch in the Royal Botanic Gardens, and join one of the free guided tours to learn about Aboriginal plant uses while identifying native flora and fauna. To the south-east of the city, follow the coastal trail to Half Moon Bay, a ruggedly handsome beach with well sheltered golden sands. Further afield in Victoria, the Grampians bushland, Yarra Valley vineyards, Great Ocean Road, Mornington Peninsula beaches, and sweeping Bogong High Plains are a haven for hiking, biking, and wine tasting.

Local restaurants

In the heart of the CBD, Serai fuses the flavours of the Philippines with Victoria-sourced ingredients from its open kitchen and chef’s omakase table. Challenge your palate with seared kangaroo kilawin (a meaty, vinegar-based appetiser), or pork belly smothered in banana hot sauce. For Italian cuisine with a conscience, Scopri sources its greens from its own biodynamic farm in the Macedon Ranges just outside the city, stuffing the tortelloni with homegrown pumpkins and squacquerone cheese. Closer to 1 Hotel Melbourne, Afloat Melbourne is a water-borne restaurant and bar which opens on the Yarra River with an annually changing theme — most recently, looking to Capri for European summer inspiration.

Local cafés

Make the pilgrimage to Brick Lane Café (walk-ins only on weekends) for all-day breakfast specials including wholemeal waffles topped with homemade jam, salted caramel mascarpone, and candied, puffed quinoa, with red chilli scrambled eggs on sourdough proving popular on the savoury side.

Local bars

Amalfi Negronis, mandarin spritzes and European wines are just a few of the refreshments to tempt you into Italian-inspired Chiara Wine Bar, especially if you make it as far down as the bottle-packed cellar. Stylish Marion is part bottle shop, part wine bar, with thoughtfully curated labels from small, local wineries, including pours from the Yarra Valley.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this architecturally pleasing hotel in Melbourne and unpacked their timbercraft and artisan coffee, a full account of their waterfront city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside 1 Hotel Melbourne on the Yarra River…

Many of the disused wharfs which dot Melbourne’s Docklands and marina have been given glow-ups over the years, but none quite so spectacular (and shiny) as 1 Hotel Melbourne. Sensitively taking up residence in the former Goods Shed No5, the hotel’s asymmetrical exterior is fronted by glass panels designed to reflect the Yarra River’s rippling surface, which seamlessly flow into river-framing, floor-to-ceiling windows. Room numbers are carved from salvaged wharf timber and bedheads made using timber reclaimed from railway bridges and fallen trees, nodding to the hotel’s industrial past while displaying a deep commitment to adaptive reuse throughout.

Continuing the ‘live green’ outlook, wellness on the waterfront comes in many forms here — whether it’s a detoxifying Bamford spa treatment, sunrise yoga session, or superfood-packed brunch before breathing in the heady scents of bottlebrush, eucalyptus and wattle on a wander through the nearby parkland.
