When to go

Summertime is particularly pleasant for strolling through Zwolle, and July’s Blauwvingerdagen fair sees stalls sprawl through the city. But Christmas is a magical mulled wine- and gingerbread-scented time.

Getting there

  Amsterdam’s Schiphol is the closest airport to Zwolle, around a 90-minute drive away.

• Trains

  Zwolle Centraal has direct links with Amsterdam and Rotterdam, handy for Eurostar arrivals.

• Automobiles

  You don’t really need a car here, unless you want to rove the Dutch countryside, although even then you could probably cycle out. If you do hire some wheels, go electric, as charging stations are dotted throughout the streets.
