When to go

The time of year to come depends on your preferred activity: if you’re here to hit the slopes, aim for Thanksgiving up until March. For summer fun on the shores of the lake, arrive in May, June or September – or join the rest of the sunseekers in July and August.

Getting there

  • Planes

    The lake’s main hub is Reno-Tahoe airport, but most international arrivals will have to connect in another American city – stopover options include San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Phoenix and Dallas.

  • Automobiles

    Tahoe is perfect road-trip territory, but the roads can get crowded during the summer, especially at weekends, when you might want to avoid Highway 89 and US50. If you’re staying in and around South Lake Tahoe, there’s lots to see and do in town, including lots of restaurants in the Heavenly ski village – and the beach is a few blocks away from many of the hotels.
