When to go

Take your Italian adventure in spring (March to May) or autumn (September to October) when there are fewer tourists to share the region’s spoils with and just-right temperatures. If your Euros are earmarked for fresh truffles, choose the latter season when these rare treats are in greater supply.

Getting there

  • Planes

Florence is the nearest international airport, around a 90-minute drive away; add 30 minutes to your journey if arriving from Pisa. Both hubs are well-served from the UK and other European cities by a wide range of airlines.
  • Trains

Trenitalia offers inexpensive tickets and rail links are good across the country. From Rome or Florence, travel to Siena then Grosseto, which is just under an hour’s drive from Chiusdino.
  • Automobiles

It’s possible to navigate Tuscany by train and bus, but the countryside its best explored by car, if you want that get-away-from-it-all feeling without a huge taxi tab. You can acquire a set of wheels at both Florence and Pisa airports.
