When to go

Summer in Tottori is prime time for the coast, nashi pears ripen from late summer, and snow crab hits menus from November. Winter can be snowy, especially around Mount Daisen.

Getting there

• Planes

  Tottori has two airports: Tottori Sand Dunes Conan Airport in the east and Yonago Kitaro Airport in the west. Both have direct flights from Tokyo Haneda, taking around 80 minutes. If you’re flying longhaul, Tokyo should be your transit hub.

• Trains

  From Osaka, the Limited Express Super Hakuto reaches Tottori in around two-and-a-half hours. For western Tottori, take the Shinkansen to Okayama and change onto the Limited Express Yakumo for Yonago. From Tokyo, both routes involve a Shinkansen connection.

• Automobiles

  Hiring a car is well worth considering in Tottori, where sights are spread across the prefecture and rural bus services can be limited. Rental desks are available at both airports, and driving gives you free rein of the coast, countryside and Mount Daisen.
