Luxury holidays in Galveston

Gulf Coast breezes sweep past storied Victorian mansions, retro arcades, and Texan-soul-food dining spots in Galveston; the Lone Star State’s island city and the historic birthplace of Juneteenth. Stroll through the Strand District where 21st-century trappings, including indie boutiques and seafood eateries, balance out old-fashioned candy shops and museums. Within the city limits, you’ll also find long stretches of sandy beach, as well as chartered boats venturing out for the day’s catch.

When to go

For warm (but less humid weather), it’s best to visit in the Fall. If you’re looking for cooler climes and a quieter stay, try for December through February.

Getting there

  • Planes

Houston has two airports: William P Hobby Airport is an hour’s drive from Galveston, and for international flights, George Bush Intercontinental Airport is about 90 minutes away by car.
  • Automobiles

The island itself is three miles wide and 30 miles long. If you’re planning to stay around downtown, a vintage streetcar or taxi should do the trick. For those looking to venture further along the coastline, you’ll want your own set of wheels.
