When to go

Many camps shut their canvas doors during Tanzania’s rainy months of April and May. Visit between June and October to see the annual great wildebeest migration – a majestic melée of two million grazing animals – when white-bearded East African wildebeest, zebra and Thomson’s gazelle embark on a journey through the Serengeti.

Getting there

  • Planes

Kilimanjaro International airport or Arusha airport are often the first points of entry, but you’ll likely then need a short transfer flight to one of the park’s seven airstrips – Seronera, Kogatende and Sasakwa being the most popular. Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, Regional Air Air, Excel and Flightlink operate flights to the airstrips – and these flights are safaris in themselves, really – an opportunity to appreciate just how vast the Serengeti is from above.
  • Automobiles

Self-drive is not recommended in Serengeti National Park – the most popular way to travel the park is by booking a drive-in safari, many of which start in the town of Arusha.
