Luxury holidays in Ngorongoro Conservation Area

In northern Tanzania, Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a wild expanse with highland plains, stretches of savannah and dense forests. However, its best-loved landmark is its namesake crater: a vast volcanic caldera that cradles flamingo-freckled Lake Magadi, tens of thousands of animals — including the Big Five and endangered black rhino — and verdant, peak-framed views.

When to go

There’s year-round potential: mid-December to February and July to October are lush after rainy seasons with warm, sunny days and prime game viewing opportunities. The wetter months are quieter, but still impress with bird and animal sightings.

Getting there

  • Planes

Connections from Kilimanjaro, Arusha or Dar Es Salaam airports touch down at Lake Manyara airstrip, which is roughly three hours’ drive from the area’s craters and camps. Your chosen safari stay can arrange road and air transfers for you.
  • Automobiles

Driving is best left to your safari guides and camp hosts.
