Luxury holidays in Vals

Mountain-top village Vals takes a slower approach to life in Switzerland’s eastern Graubünden canton. Set in the rolling contours of its namesake valley, this quaint Swiss town may be humbler than its glitzy southeastern sister, St Moritz, but it's still got plenty to boast about. Skiing takes hold of winter agendas, and sunnier seasons are spent swimming in limpid lakes and hiking enchanting trails; but Vals is really all about its healing hot springs, storied for their restorative skills since the 17th century and well worth a soak.

When to go

Snow-seekers can take to the slopes between January and March; during the warmer months pistes turn to trails and Vals becomes a hiking haven.

Getting there

  • Planes

Zürich is the closest international airport, around a two-hour drive from Vals. If you’re arriving domestically, St Moritz’s Engadin Airport and St Gallen Altenrhein are also two hours away by car.
  • Trains

There are plenty of idyllic rail routes around the Swiss Alps, and direct trains run from Geneva and Zürich to Illanz station, which is just under 30 minutes from the village centre.
  • Automobiles

Train travel is usually preferred when ogling the area’s camera-ready landscapes; but if you’d rather be behind the wheel, driving is a fairly simple feat and makes day trips to surrounding cities all the easier.
