Luxury holidays in Geneva

Encircled by Alpine peaks and bordered by a deep blue lake, Geneva is famous for its cosmopolitan character, lakeside lifestyle and worldly residents. With a population of around 200,000, it’s one of the most compact metropolises in the world – but that doesn't stop it punching above its weight when it comes to international diplomacy. Stroll along the wide boulevards, leafy parks or waterfront promenades and you’ll likely hear more languages than you can count on both hands. Unsurprisingly, the ‘city of peace’ has monuments and stately buildings galore, but venture along the banks of the Rhône and you’ll discover a grittier, more down-to-earth side to this well-heeled city.

When to go

Geneva is at its best in summer, when the weather is warm and you can boat across its namesake lake. If you’re planning on hiking in the mountains, try spring or early autumn, when it's a little cooler.

Getting there

  • Planes

You can fly directly to Geneva from the larger UK airports and Continental hubs.
  • Automobiles

You won’t need a car in the city, but hiring one makes sense if you plan to explore the surrounding hills and mountains.
