An abundance of marinas is your clue that sailing-friendly months (May to September) are when the island is at its most populous. Although October to April brings less clement weather, there’s a crisp, cold charm to the quiet of Lidingö in winter.

  Regular ferry services from Nybrokajen in central Stockholm are your more scenic commuter option.

• Trains

  You can hop on the Arlanda Express from the airport to Stockholm Central, using subway services to Ropsten and an onwards tram to reach Lidingö.

• Automobiles

  Slick transport links mean you’re unlikely to need a set of wheels, but driving to the island is possible via its road bridge.
