Luxury holidays in Kalutara District

We’re not in Colombo any more: despite lying in Sri Lanka’s most populous province, Kalutara District is the capital’s antidote — a rural stretch where forested hillsides, patched with cinnamon and rubber plantations, tumble towards a gentle coastline of sprawling sandy beaches and low-tempo towns and villages. Home to sacred temples, ancient trees, and the mysterious Fa Hien Cave, it’s where history and mindfulness meet; a pastoral pocket that’s tailormade for quiet reflection.

When to go

Kalutara District shines year-round, but for clear skies and smooth sailing, April to September is your best bet to sidestep the monsoons.

Getting there

  • Planes

Kalutara District is a 90-minute drive from Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport, with Sri Lankan Airlines flying direct from Sydney and various European cities.
  • Trains

Kalutara town has two train stations, with the one-hour scenic route from Colombo bringing you into Kalutara South Station.
  • Automobiles

A set of wheels is useful for exploring the district, but if you’re sticking to the beach, the odd tuk-tuk ride should suffice.
