Luxury holidays in Batticaloa District

Anchored by its namesake lagoon, Batticaloa District is a lesser-known base on Sri Lanka's captivating east coast. Days are defined by their slow-paced approach: idling along its beaches, roaming traditional Tamil towns and befriending local fishers as they cast for their daily catch. Teasing wafts of cooking play pleasingly with the senses; and for a scene set to captivate your gaze, too, amble across Kallady Bridge at sunset.

When to go

Visit during the dry season, between May and September, when lagoons are balmy and beaches, sun-soaked.

Getting there

  • Planes

You’ll need to catch a short connecting flight from Sri Lanka’s larger Bandaranaike or Mattala Rajapaksa international airports. From Batticaloa Airport, it’s around 10 to 15 minutes into town by car.
  • Automobiles

If you’re driving from Colombo, strap in for a seven- to eight-hour road trip along the A4 and A15. Otherwise, leave the driving to the professionals in these untarmacked ends of Sri Lanka.
