When to go

Tenerife’s climate is warm year-round, reaching its hottest in August and rarely dropping below 15˚C in winter. Rainfall (when there is some) is heavier in the north, with November–February being the wettest months. July and August tend to be most popular with family holidaymakers, so if you don't like the crowds, consider a winter break instead.

Getting there

• Planes

  The island is served by two airports, Tenerife North and Tenerife South (aka Reina Sofía/Tenerife Sur), both offering connections across Europe. Direct daily flights are available from all major UK cities throughout the year, but prices do rise in the summer. For Costa Adeje stays, Tenerife South is the best option, around 15 minutes' drive from most resorts; transfers from Tenerife North take closer to an hour.

• Boats

  Regular ferries from mainland Spain leave from Huelva and Cádiz, docking at the port of Santa Cruz in the north of Tenerife. Acciona Transmediterranea (www.trasmediterranea.es) and Navierra Armas (www.navieraarmas.com) both offer a weekly service on and off the island.

• Trains

  A tram service provides a modern and eco-friendly means of exploring the metropolitan areas of Santa Cruz and La Laguna (www.metrotenerife.com).

• Automobiles

  Hiring a car is the best way to see Tenerife hassle-free – although if you're mostly planning to bask on the beach, you won't need one. There are numerous rental outlets at both airports, including Europcar (www.europcar.com) and Cicar (www.cicar.com). There are several taxi ranks at most resorts with boards showing set fares to major destinations. Taxis can also be flagged down almost anywhere on the island. Titsa (www.titsa.com) is the main bus operator, with a network covering most of the island.
