Luxury holidays in Sonoma

It isn’t hard to make California sound dreamy, but things get especially idyllic when the topic is Sonoma, an hour’s drive north of San Francisco. This historic city, in the heart of the lauded Sonoma Valley winemaking region, blends smart restaurants, ice-cream shops, browse-worthy boutiques and art galleries with a weekly farmers’ market and top notes of tasting rooms across town. Or you can drive out to the valley’s many wondrous wineries. California, here you come…

When to go

If you want to help out with the grape-picking (or just admire the brilliant fall foliage), time your visit between mid August and late October. Spring, with its pleasant temperatures and vineyards in bloom, is equally lovely.

Getting there

  • Planes

The two main airports serving Sonoma are San Francisco and Oakland, both of which are around a 90-minute drive away from the centre of the city.
  • Automobiles

A car is practically essential in this part of California, for getting to and from the region’s famous wineries and for road trips up and down the Pacific Coast Highway.
