Luxury holidays in Ljubljana

Ljubljana is a progressive, green city, with a car-free centre and pro-cycling ethos, but there’s boundless colour woven into its cultural tapestry. The Slovenian capital’s mediaeval landscape is threaded with vibrant modern art and culinary scenes. At its cobbled heart, Prešeren Square is crowned by a candy-pink Baroque church, and the café-lined Ljubljanica River reflects rows of pastel-hued townhouses. For the full tableau, take the funicular up to the castle, where days fade into golden sunsets.

When to go

In summer, the city’s cultural scene fizzes with classical music and art festivals, but spring and autumn hit the sweet spot for mild weather minus the high-season crowds.

Getting there

  • Planes

Flights touch down at Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport from European hubs including London Gatwick and Paris Charles de Gaulle. There are also seasonal flights from London Heathrow.
  • Trains

Ljubljana railway station has direct links to Trieste and Vienna, with easy connections onwards to Venice, making Continental city-hopping seductively simple.
  • Automobiles

Ljubljana is around an hour’s drive from Trieste and two-and-a-half hours from Venice, plus it’s linked by motorway to cities in Austria, Croatia and Hungary, too. However, much of the city centre is pedestrianised, and bike rentals are always on hand, so you won’t need a car unless you plan to explore further afield.
