Luxury holidays in Polizzi Generosa

Given its star-studded descendants (Martin Scorcese and Domenico Dolce, of ‘and Gabbana’ fame), you’d expect Polizzi Generosa to attract a steady stream of film-buffs and fashion-fiends. Yet, this small town, set on a limestone mount at the entrance of the Madonie Natural Park, flies under Sicilian holidaymakers’ radars despite its mediaeval heritage, hiking hotspots and countless churches. Nephophiles (‘cloud enthusiasts’), rejoice: here you can chance your luck at spotting the ethereal maretta phenomenon, when the foothills appear to be wrapped in cotton wool. And Polizzi has year-round appeal, from skiing in winter, to spring’s sea of wildflowers, to August’s hazelnut festival (a favourite ingredient, which you’ll also find in local sweet treats pastizzotti and cucciddati).

When to go

Polizzi Generosa is an all-year-round destination, with skiing in winter on Sicily’s second highest mountain, Pizzo Carbonara, or during summer, beaches are in driving distance.
