Luxury holidays in Catania

Sicilian city Catania may live in the rumbling shadow of reigning Mount Etna, but look beyond its scruffy stone exteriors to stumble upon ornate chiselled-with-cherubs palazzi, Baroque piazzas and locally loved markets. Spend days wandering Via Etnea’s stuccoed streets, bartering for fresh barracudas at famed fish markets and basking on bella beaches. Come evening, aristocrat-free bars teem with local artists and nearby trattorias waft the scent of home-made pasta alla Norma – Catania’s signature aubergine-adorned sauce. So though the city owes fame to its dramatic backdrop, its sharp spirit is fuelled by much more.

When to go

Still free from tourist herds, Catania impresses year round. Beaches are at their emptiest and balmiest during June and September.

Getting there

  • Planes

Fly direct into Catania’s international airport from most European hubs, including London, Paris and Barcelona.
  • Trains

Though their scheduling can be a little temperamental, trains are a great way to see neighbouring Sicilian towns. Trenitalia runs services between Catania, Messina, Palermo, Taormina and Syracuse.
  • Automobiles

A car isn’t essential as the city is walkable, but if you’re hoping to explore further afield then the airport has plenty of hire booths.
