When to go

Some attractions and restaurants close in the autumn, and don’t typically reopen until Easter. To maximise your chances of being joined by sunshine and seeing all the sights, visit the Inner Hebrides between April and October.

Getting there

  • Planes

Glasgow and Oban are your nearest mainland airports. Small-plane flights serve Islay, Tiree and Coll.
  • Boats

For ferries to Mull, Coll, Tiree and Colonsay, Oban is the gateway port; for Skye, head to Mallaig, and for Islay (between May and October), Kennacraig is your embarkation point.
  • Automobiles

For navigating the larger islands, having your own set of wheels makes sense. If you’re travelling without a car, you’ll be relying on bus services or taxis to get around.
