When to go

The months from April to October enjoy the sunnier climes in these elemental parts. During the rest of the year, dress for the weather and you’ll be rewarded with bracing hill walks and quiet beach strolls, but bear in mind that some restaurants and attractions will be closed.

Getting there

• Planes

  Glasgow and Oban are your nearest mainland airports. Small-plane flights serve Stornoway (on the Isle of Lewis), Benbecula and Barra in the Outer Hebrides. For the Inner group of islands, there are runways at Islay, Tiree and Coll.

• Boats

  Ullapool, Oban and Mallaig are the main gateway ports for ferry services to various islands including Lewis, Skye and Mull, and you’ll need to secure tickets in advance.

• Automobiles

  A set of wheels is a good idea for navigating the larger islands. If you’re travelling without a car, you’ll be relying on bus services or taxis to get around.
