When to go

From December to April, the Peninsula’s weather is warm and dry (it’s the ideal window for whale-watching, too, although you may share sightings with other enthusiasts). Off-season, the humidity rises.

Getting there

  • Planes

The peninsula is best served by El Catey International Airport (Samaná), but you could also fly into Puerto Plata or Santiago De Los Caballeros, both around a three-hour drive. Or fly into Las Americas International (Santo Domingo) by the island’s capital city and you’ll be in beach heaven in around two hours.
  • Automobiles

When you’re not on horseback, you may want a car is to explore the natural beauty spots nearby (although travel at night is best avoided). Santo Domingo’s airport offers car rentals through most major agencies, or your hotel should be able to recommend a local driver to chauffeur you.
