Luxury holidays in São Teotónio

Let the days slip away in Alentejo’s red-roofed region of São Teotónio, where blueberries bloom in nearby farms, locals totter about afternoon tasks and golden-sand beaches fill with flocking sunseekers. After a morning wandering along cobblestone streets freckled with old mosaic, past branco buildings and pastel-painted homes, head to the shores of Zambujeira do Mar for a siesta on the sand. Don’t worry, there’s something for action lovers as well; ride through the region’s verdant landscapes on the Algarve Trail, or cycle one of the many secluded routes through neighbouring towns and traditional Portuguese villages.

When to go

The best weather hits São Teotónio from May to November, when temperatures are pleasant and rain is minimal. If you’re hoping for a slightly quieter trip, it may be better to head to Alentejo outside of the July to August holiday period.

Getting there

  • Planes

Fly direct to Faro from most international airports. From there, you can either rent a car and drive up the coast for an hour and a half to São Teotónio, or opt for a slightly more scenic route and take the train for just under an hour from Faro to Santa Clara-Sabo, before hoping in a taxi for a final 25 minutes.
  • Automobiles

Given the abundance of activities in São Teotónio’s surrounding regions and fairly easy roads (except the occasional narrow hill), a car can be a great way to explore the more secluded areas.
