When to go

Temperatures are pleasant most of the year, but if it's surfing you’re after, October to May is prime wave estate with tidal treats to keep you busy all winter. Come summer, top up your tan and your plate at the town’s annual Festival do Ouriço-do-Mar.

Getting there

• Planes

  The closest airport is Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport. Flights arrive here from the UK and Europe, Asia and the Americas. Hourly buses run from the nearby terminal, Campo Grande, and will get you to Ericeira in just over an hour. If you’re driving, that time is halved, with an ETA of around 35 minutes.

• Automobiles

  For serious surfers, a car can come in handy here, allowing you to swiftly suss out the day’s top spot. For the rest of us, Ericeira is compact enough to explore comfortably by foot, and day-trips are easy, with excellent transport links from both Lisbon and neighbouring Sintra.
