Luxury holidays in Storfjord
Stretching 110 kilometres as it slices through the snow-dusted Sunnmøre Alps, Storfjord – whose name translates as Great Fjord – more than matches up to its mighty moniker. Ancient farms and tiny hamlets teeter on its pine-forested slopes, and waterfalls crash into mirrored waters. For hardy fjord-farers, whale-spotting sea safaris, kayaking and cliff-hugging hikes await. Cosier corners beckon in nearby Ålesund, where rainbow-painted art nouveau buildings cluster on the coast, hiding treasure-stuffed boutiques and restorative seafood restaurants.
When to go
If it’s the all-important Aurora you’re hoping to catch, October to March is your best bet. Daylight-chasers should aim for between June and August.
PlanesConnections to Ålesund Airport take off from Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim. There are also direct flights from Amsterdam.
BoatsSome hotels have private docks, if you’re donning your skipper hat and sailing in on your own yacht.
AutomobilesHiring your own wheels is a good idea if you fancy free rein over the region’s fjord-skirting scenic routes, but most hotels should be able to arrange excursions and airport transfers.
