Luxury holidays in Storfjord

Stretching 110 kilometres as it slices through the snow-dusted Sunnmøre Alps, Storfjord – whose name translates as Great Fjord – more than matches up to its mighty moniker. Ancient farms and tiny hamlets teeter on its pine-forested slopes, and waterfalls crash into mirrored waters. For hardy fjord-farers, whale-spotting sea safaris, kayaking and cliff-hugging hikes await. Cosier corners beckon in nearby Ålesund, where rainbow-painted art nouveau buildings cluster on the coast, hiding treasure-stuffed boutiques and restorative seafood restaurants.

When to go

If it’s the all-important Aurora you’re hoping to catch, October to March is your best bet. Daylight-chasers should aim for between June and August.

Getting there

  • Planes

Connections to Ålesund Airport take off from Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim. There are also direct flights from Amsterdam.
  • Boats

Some hotels have private docks, if you’re donning your skipper hat and sailing in on your own yacht.
  • Automobiles

Hiring your own wheels is a good idea if you fancy free rein over the region’s fjord-skirting scenic routes, but most hotels should be able to arrange excursions and airport transfers.
