Luxury holidays in Financial District

The stalking ground of real-life wolves of Wall Street, Manhattan’s Financial District is where the suited and booted come for work and a little play. Now home to the island’s (and the USA’s) highest skyscraper (and the competition around here is fierce), a spiny-mammal-resembling shopping centre (the Oculus) and an iconic brass bull, it’s where the city makes its millions. As with all Manhattan ’hoods, this one’s been given an affectionate, abbreviating (and erratically capitalised) portmanteau: FiDi.

When to go

NYC is the city that literally never sleeps and the same applies to its visitor numbers. New Yorkers would probably tell you they love April and May or October and November best, but some of us just can’t resist the thought of a Manhattan Christmas. It’s often sub-zero and snowy between January and March, and the summer temperatures can be fry-an-egg-on-the-sidewalk soaring.

Getting there

  • Planes

New York City is served by airports in almost every direction, but Newark is closest to this downtown district, a 35-minute drive away. Next is LaGuardia, 40 minutes from FiDi by car. To and from JFK, the drive time should be around 50 minutes.
  • Boats

The New York Ferry ships commuters in from Brooklyn districts including Saturday Night Fever-backdrop Bay Ridge, and across the East River from Dumbo and hipster-heaven Williamsburg, to Wall Street/Pier 11. You’ll also be able to hop on the free Staten Island Ferry to cruise past Lady Liberty on your way from the Whitehall terminal to and from St George on Staten Island.
  • Automobiles

The Financial District is easy to get around on foot, and even if hiring a car is easy, parking it probably won’t be. Stick to the subway (or your own legs); the principal stops of use are Chambers Street, Wall Street and Broad Street.
