When to go

This part of town is always fun; but if you’re planning a lot of pavement pounding, you might be more comfortable exploring in spring or autumn, especially if you’re hitting the High Line.

Getting there

  • Planes

    JFK, La Guardia and Newark (in New Jersey) are the city’s main international hubs. From JFK, Chelsea is a 25-minute drive or a 40-minute train ride from Terminal 4 to Penn Station via Jamaica. From La Guardia, it’s a 15-minute drive or a bus/train ride from Terminal B to Roosevelt Avenue, then Woodside to Penn Station. From Newark, it’s a 20-minute taxi ride or 30-minute Amtrak ride.
  • Automobiles

    ‘Hey, I’m walking here!’ might be a cliché, but driving in NYC requires patience and a will of steel. If you’re confident in your taxicab- and pedestrian-dodging ability, you can hire a car at all three airports. Remember to drive on the right, don’t make right-hand turns on red and keep clear of hydrants – and, if you find a parking spot, mazel tov.
