When to go

Monterey’s mild climate and ocean breezes make it a year-round destination. December to February brings the most rain and summer can be busy. For prime whale watching, visit between April and December.

  San José and San Francisco are the nearest international airports. San José is an 80-minute drive, while San Francisco is around two hours away by car.

• Trains

  Amtrak’s Coast Starlight service, running between Los Angeles and Seattle, stops daily in downtown Salinas.

  The walkable towns of Monterey County mean you don’t need a car, but to explore the Pacific coastline and those all important wineries, a set of wheels will come in handy.
