When to go

Hiroshima, especially its islands, enjoys a clement climate for most of the year, although visitors tend to favour spring and autumn – not just for the temperatures, but the sightings of sakura blossoms and momiji leaves.

Getting there

• Planes

  Hiroshima Airport serves the region; international arrivals will need to hop on a plane from Tokyo to reach it (a two-hour journey).

• Trains

  High-speed bullet trains zip along the San'yō Shinkansen line, which has several stops central in the region.

• Automobiles

  Hiroshima city is walkable, but to explore the wider prefecture or cross bridges through the string of islands, a set of wheels will come in handy. Bring the bike rack so you can tackle the famous 70-kilometre Shimanami Kaido cycling route.
