Emilia-Romagna is at its dining-alfresco best from June to August, although the September harvest brings a number of food-focused festivals too.

Getting there

• Planes

  Bologna’s Guglielmo Marconi Airport is Emilia-Romagna’s main hub, with the most connections across Europe (or Milan Linate is around a 90-minute drive away); you could also touchdown at Rimini or Parma.

• Trains

  Travelling around the region by train, or connecting from Italy’s major cities, is easy, with stations at Reggio-Emilia, Parma, Bologna, Modena and other hotspots.

• Automobiles

  With Emilia-Romagna’s motoring legacy, you may feel obliged to slip into something sporty here (or hire a vintage car for classic drives through the Apennines); for easier exploring and seeking out worth-the-journey countryside eateries, wheels will come in handy.
