When to go

Due to high winds and heavy snowfall, visiting during the winter is only an option with adapted 4x4 transport and one for the hardy. It’s best to plan your trip around the roads, which open up in late June and close at the end of September.

Getting there

  • Planes

International flights touch down at Keflavik, from there in summer, it’s a three-and-a-half-hour drive to the heart of Central Highlands.
  • Automobiles

Central Highlands, with its gravel roads and rugged terrain, is best explored via 4x4 and several companies offer Super Jeep tours to make your life easier. If you’re renting wheels in summer, it’ll need to be insured for Iceland’s mountain F roads. In winter, organised transfers are the way to go: this is not the season for self-drive.
