Luxury holidays in Skyros

Greece knows how to draw in the crowds, but lesser-known Skyros keeps a low profile in the Sporades. Rugged and remote, this sun-kissed island charms with white-washed towns that hug the hillside, secluded sandy stretches, and wild, wild horses that roam as they please. According to Greek mythology, Skyros was Achilles’ hiding place before riding into Troy, and modern-day holidaymakers are here to camp out in similar lowkey style.

When to go

Head here in summer to make the most of the Skyrian sunshine – things stay quiet year-round on this under-the-radar island.

Getting there

  • Planes

Fly into Athens or Thessaloniki, then take a 45-minute connecting flight to Skyros.
  • Automobiles

From Athens, you could drive three hours to Kymi port and take a car ferry to Skyros, which takes just under two hours, or hire some wheels once island-side. The isle has taxis and public buses, but a car comes in handy for beach-hopping.
