For warm (but less humid weather), it’s best to visit in the Fall. If you’re looking for cooler climes and a quieter stay, try for December through February.

Getting there

  Houston has two airports: William P Hobby Airport is an hour’s drive from Galveston, and for international flights, George Bush Intercontinental Airport is about 90 minutes away by car.

• Automobiles

  The island itself is three miles wide and 30 miles long. If you’re planning to stay around downtown, a vintage streetcar or taxi should do the trick. For those looking to venture further along the coastline, you’ll want your own set of wheels.
