Luxury holidays in Toulon

Say adieu to the Côte d’Azur crowds for Toulon, a smaller port city to the west of the Riviera with a quaint Gallic charm all of its own. Here, elegant art deco blocks sit alongside chic cafés and family-run restaurants. Frenzies of beach bound surfers head for breaking waves as local fishermen set off for their catch of the day. All the beauty without the bustle, plus a backdrop of Mount Faron, makes Toulon a must for your Grace Kelly-style gallivanting and a heady French fix.

When to go

For the best sun, head to Toulon between April and October.

Getting there

  • Planes

Some European cities have direct flights to Toulon’s Hyères Airport, but most require a connection in Paris. If you’d rather fly direct and don’t mind more of a drive, fly into Nice or Marseille – Nice is just under two hours drive from Toulon and Marseille is a little over an hour.
  • Trains

If you’re looking for a scenic coastal ride and travelling from London, there’s a train to Marseille via Lille, or the TGV runs from Paris with a stop in Toulon.
  • Automobiles

A car isn’t necessary, Toulon has a good taxi system (just be sure to book in advance). Those hoping to explore further afield may be more inclined to get a set of wheels, if so there are a number of rental booths at the airport.
