Luxury holidays in Portrush

Portrush is a characterful harbour town in coastal County Antrim, edged by wild Atlantic beaches. World-class Royal Portrush Golf Club draws players from across the globe, and non-golfers can rejoice in the surfing or seafood restaurants, castle ruins and whiskey distilleries. Mind-blowing basalt geology at Giant’s Causeway is the area’s other giant draw.

When to go

For consistent surf, April is best. Summer brings family-friendly bustle and warmer beach days. For fewer crowds and a gentler pace, aim for summer’s fringe months, in May or September, say.

Getting there

  • Planes

City of Derry and Belfast International are the nearest airports, with Belfast offering a wider range of direct international flights. Both are around an hour’s drive from Portrush.
  • Trains

Translink runs daily trains to Portrush from both Belfast and Derry/Londonderry; each journey takes around 90 minutes and tends to require a change at Coleraine.
  • Automobiles

Although Portrush is reachable by train, a car is useful for exploring further afield — from castle ruins to distilleries, to the dramatic Causeway Coastal Route.
