Luxury holidays in Guatapé

In northwest Colombia, the lively Andean resort town of Guatapé is synonymous with its imposing monolith, El Peñón de Guatapé — once revered by the indigenous Tahami people and still a site of pilgrimage today. Guatapé sits beside a glimmering reservoir, dammed in the 1970s and now patrolled by tour boats and kayaks. Idle wanders between cafés and the town’s colourful zócalos (squares) also compete to fill your camera roll.

When to go

December to March are Guatapé’s driest months with balmy temperatures. Its highlands’ setting means nights can be cool from April onwards; March is our tip for a still-warm-but-quieter sweet spot.

Getting there

  • Planes

Around 90 minutes by car from Guatapé, Mária Córdova Airport in Medellin is your nearest landing strip; for international routes, you’ll likely need to change planes in Bogotá.
  • Automobiles

Driving in rural Colombia is best left to the locals; transfers and taxis are hassle-free and safer.
