When to go

July and August are the hottest months of the year – temperatures peak at 38°C – but the latter is prime holiday time for Spanish mainlanders, so expect more visitors. Daytime temperatures from May to June and September to November hover around 28°C, and nights are refreshingly cooler.

Getting there

  • Planes

All seven major Canary Islands have airports; most direct international flights (and those from mainland Spain) land at Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and La Palma.
  • Boats

A ferry service links up the Canary Islands.
  • Automobiles

Having your own set of wheels is ideal for exploring the islands; the most scenic routes are best enjoyed when you can spontaneously stop for a longer look.
